I think jstew has uncovered the inspiration behind the song "Beth" by KISS...

Were Russell to go to July 1, is there any doubt he’s going to get at least, emphasis on at least, a five-year offer for $5.5 million? And he may well be looking for more than that, both in term and dollars.

If Kris Russell is looking for that kind of money and term, the Flames need to trade him at the deadline. That's just way too much cabbage.

Reading the trade market tea leaves

It's stuff like this that makes me not too upset about about playing Dion $6M and change over the next few years. Ottawa wouldn't sign anyone any better for less money than that.

That's way too much money for Russell.

Sounds like the Wideman hearing is over (only 6.5 hours) - I guess the following didn't happen.

One of Feaster's best moves while GM of the Flames was acquiring Russell from the Blues for a 5th round pick. IF BT can trade Russell for a 1st rounder or highly touted prospect, that would be fine asset management.

$7 mil in cap space.

And for what it's worth they still have almost $7M in cap space for this year. Almost 20M for next year with only Hoffman (3-4M raise) and Ceci (1.5-2.5M raise) worth signing this year from their team.

LOL at Ottawa caring about cap space for the foreseeable future.
They have 15 guys signed for next year at $51 million, with Hoffman and Ceci both RFA. Assuming those two come in combined, oh, $8 million, they'll have at most $15 million to pay 7 guys and assuming they want to be a better team, that should put them pretty tight against the cap.

And if Dion totally regresses away from Babcock, well...

I can't envision a scenario where Kris Russell could sign a contract with the Flames where he is making more money than TJ Brodie. That said, the same GM signed Deryk Engelland to a three year contract worth 2.9 million per season, so what do I know?
