Nino wasn't ready for the NHL his rookie year & it showed. If he had earned a spot during training camp I get it. However, that wasn't the case. Nino & his agent basically whined & cried his way out of the Islanders organization. By the time they were done his value had dropped big time. Yeah they could have kept him & put him in the minors for another season, but Nino had become a problem & the organization didn't want his attitude around. I have no complaints. The Isles have a good team & one of the best prospect pools in the league.
Once again, that falls on the team. Who forced the Isles to play him 55 times in the NHL when he clearly wasn't ready?

Wrong. They traded Nino due to the fact that he & his agent had a hissy fit because he didn't make the team after his rookie year. He wasn't ready for the NHL so they sent him to Bridgeport where he sulked for awhile. Nino & his agent voiced their displeasure to the media. Once he realized he wasn't going to be in the NHL his game improved. Nino & his agent burnt to many bridges. It was time to go.

Even if it was time to go, they didn't need to trade him for Cal Clutterbuck. Ugh.

As a young player with many RFA years ahead of him the Isles were calling the shots. I'm not actually a fan of Nino but even I can see that is pretty bad asset management.

Very, very different situations. The Isles didn't have to get rid of Nino, they just played their hand terribly.

Imagine being him, playing your entire rookie season in the show and then being told, despite the fact the team didn't go out and get a hell of a lot better in your position in the intervening time, that you're going to be sent to the farm. You're telling me you wouldn't be pissed?

Doesn't matter that he pretty much sucked in his rookie year, it's mishandling on the part of the Isles and their fuckup doesn't excuse a bad trade in an era where promising youngsters are worth more than gold.

/They kind of made up for it by dumping Reinhart on Edmonton for a 1st and a 2nd.

You mean the day when DaBoltsNIsles suddenly stopped thinking that Reinhart will be a #1 D?

Franson's a good add for Buffalo. That team is having a good off-season. They don't make the playoffs next year but I expect an improvement from them.

He's getting the same salary he got in Toronto lol. He should've fired his agent months ago.
Yeah, there's something weird about the whole thing. On the surface that seems like pretty good value for a 30 point guy who generally fares well in the fancy stats too (his disastrous post-deadline stint with Nashville aside). So what's the deal?

#NJDevils sign free agent defenseman David Schlemko to a one-year, one-way contract.

Thought for sure he would end up in Vancouver. Helped the Flames to a big shootout win in Boston last season, good luck to David in Joisey.

At that point other teams likely viewed Nino as a problem. His value had dropped significantly. I didn't like the trade at the time & still don't, but that's the way things go. Clutterbuck & Goalie prospect Stephon Williams is better than what Washington got for Filip Forsberg.

I never thought he would be a #1 defenseman. I thought he could be a top 4. The player I wanted with the 4th pick was Jacob Trouba.
Trouba, Rielly, Dumba, Pouliot...the number of potential top pair D-men that went after Reinhart is amazing. Rare screwup draft-wise in recent Isles history.

I think Cody and his agent just grossly overestimated the demand for defencemen in an offseason where the cap didn't rise nearly as much as hoped. There are plenty of teams more interested in their own young d-men than any outside help unless it was a slam dunk toward addressing their needs (like Mike Green in Detroit).

Good signing regardless, very low-risk high-reward.
