It's just a little surprising coming from a fan of Pittsburgh, a city of almost identical overall size, who had a team that was in the same or worse condition at the <15 year mark in their history. Did the league survive the completely uninteresting matchup of the Penguins and North Stars? What about Colorado Vs Florida? Ducks and Senators? Tampa winning a cup was supposed to ruin hockey.

How does it get to the point where the whole season is about players and suddenly it's only about the city when the finals comes around? By that logic the final four every year should be LA, Chicago, Toronto and NYR. Because ratings.

You make the final, you earned it. Regardless of where you play. Size of the city doesn't mean anything. Reputation and history does. And how do you get that credibility? You go out and you compete for cups without giving a shit if the marketing team is happy.

Let's be honest with ourselves, those two cups are a big reason anyone fought for the team to stay in Pittsburgh.
You sure did get a lot of mileage out of "ratings nightmare". Pix simply stated that the low ratings would give Bettman fits, because that's pretty much all the poison dwarf cares about.

Also, your reasoning for the Pens staying in Pittsburgh is pretty flimsy. That's like saying the Hurricanes won't leave Carolina because they won a Cup ten years ago. It also neglects the fact that Buffalo was bankrupt around the same time and managed to stay in an even smaller metro despite the fact they've never lifted the Cup ever. For all the shit Bettman (deservedly) gets, he's a bigger proponent for keeping a team in its current location than any of the commissioners of the other big 3 leagues, for better (Pit, Buf) or worse (Phx, Phx, Fla, Phx).

There was zero part where I said they wouldn't deserve it...?

That...that isn't going to happen lol.

Would be kind of nice if it did. Every NHL franchise suddenly worth twice as much.

On the other hand Seattle, Quebec City and Vegas all collectively shit their pants.

500 million for the team
250 million for poutine

You forgot deep fried butter tarts.

Don't forget Kessel's hot dog supply.

Can't be included, that contract is worth BILLIONS.

The more owners have to pay to buy the franchise, the more they're going to make the fans pay to watch/support it.

Does the Pens sale including the rights to the old Mellon arena land? That would be worth quite a bit, development-wise...

And now we know why the Leafs ate salary :dhd:

Good point. So the fans in Quebec and Seattle and the fan in Vegas just shit their pants.

I read a convoluted article about some kind of development rights included, but it also said that the owners of the new arena and Casino area get final approval of any project or something.

It was a very poorly written article.

Yes, it would. I know that's part of the reason Burkle sort of wants to remain involved to an extent. They're building the new U.S. steel office there and developing the surrounding area. Big money.

@ChrisKuc: Meanwhile, the Red Wings have signed forward Dan Cleary to a one-year contract.

I know some Red Wings fans who won't be happy about this news.
