I
It was partly the addition of Jagr (rookie) and "the trade" that brought in Francis and Ulf, in addition to other trades that brought in Murphy and Joey Mullen

Lest we forget Badger Bob behind the bench :thumb:

That revolving door of coaches would have ended with Badger Bob, if the pearly gates hadn't opened for him. :(

So was the rest of the roster just an absolute toxic dump? To only squeeze in once and on the back of a Herculean effort at that, what the hell was the issue?
Essentially yes it was.

His rookie year had Warren Young as his line mate. He also had Mike Bullard for a few seasons, but they decided to trade him for freaking Dan Quinn. :L

Back to Warren Young he exemplifies the trash that was the penguins roster during those years.
Here are his goals scored by season numbers (NOTE: doing this in era's):
Pre Mario: 0,1,1
During Mario: 40
After Mario: 22,8,0

As for his 22 goal season, if memory serves me correctly, he was traded to Detroit and got to play with another 20 year old center by the name of Steve Yzerman.

Hey puck, I'm sure you recall the days in hockey pools when Gretzky goals and assists would be split just to keep things somewhat level.
absolutely. G-assists went first, and G-goals was usually well inside the top-10

Yes goalies were alot smaller less athletic,
but defensemen were allowed to go for piggy-back rides

for me it always comes down to how much you were separating yourself from the rest of the league
81-82, Gretzky had 92 goals. next best was Bossy at 64. that's a 40%+ difference
same year 212 points was also 40+% over Bossy's 147

a few years later 83-84 he led in goals by 55% (87 versus P Stastny's 56)
points was 62% higher than runner up Paul Coffey (205 - 126)
how many of Coffey's assists were "dish it off to 99 and the line up at center for the faceoff"?

for context, McJebus won the points race by 7% over two players this year.
he was not top 5 in goals.
until we are having that conversation, we aren't having a "best ever" conversation.

Yup, that was the alternative to splitting goals and assists for #99 lol
the biggest pool I ever won was in 94.

I picked all Rangers, Leafs and Canucks Players lol. I think it was a $700 pot

I think that McDavid is playing the best hockey that has ever been played right now.

But as @puckhead pointed out it's about how you compare to your peers. While McDavid is playing hockey at a higher level than anyone else ever has (due to training, health and conditioning advancements), he is far from the greatest player ever. That is a 3 horse race between Mario, Gretz and Orr.

And it's not even close to me.

Nothing. Just former NHL goalie Tommy Soderstrom playing street hockey in his neighborhood in his pro gear.
