I think the majority of the uptick in scoring has to do with the compressed schedule and guys being tired. Defensive lapses and likely an increase in turnovers in the defensive zone creating more scoring opportunities. I haven't looked at any advanced stats to confirm this, just a guess.
The "average" goalies are better than in years past, but there are fewer top end talents in net now, if that makes sense.This and I wonder if the goalie quality gone down hill in recent seasons?
Fewer empty net goals just tells me that it's a better built team rather than relying on stellar goaltending as much.I mean, nobody really cares about the Jennings trophy, however the fact that Carolina wins the Jennings because they allowed fewer empty net goals than the Flames (Flames had 11 while Carolina had 6) is kinda dumb.
