I didn’t read the story so I’m not sure if it mentioned all of his work stoppages.

I mean, remaining as a commissioner for over 30 years while at the same time presiding over four work stoppages including losing one full season of play is likely never going to be matched again.

not an ideal comparison but it took the NHL 26 years for NHL expansion fees to go from $45 million to $500 million ... took MLS 11 years to go from $40 million to $500 million :noidea:

To be fair, Gary has grown the league from a mom-and-pop organization to a multi-billion dollar league and that fact shouldn't be diminished. There have been a fair number of mis-steps along the way though and those are difficult to ignore. Could the league have grown to be an even bigger success under a different commissioner's watch?

Great question. If they had brought in old-school hockey meathead the NHL wouldn't exist today.
But if they had a Goodell or Stern type it would be bigger. Yeah, I know Bettman was a Stern disciple but he is nothing like Stern.

NOTE: I should add why he is nothing like Stern is that he caved to the old-school meatheads at times. Whereas I doubt a stronger personality like Stern would have.

Another Major Mis-Step

Think of all the relocation that happened under him also.

He expanded to Atlanta and let that fail. Then to make up for his "mistake" of letting the Jets leave, he let the Thrashers move there.
Same thing with Stars and Wild. Making up for prior mistakes doesn't solve a problem it just puts a band-aid on it.

NOTE: I know there were other factors in all those teams moves, but he still let it happen. And in turn continues to protect the Coyotes failing franchise.

Letting Versus/OLN take the US TV rights over ESPN was a very bad move. Yes, Versus offered doubled the money of ESPN initially, but if nobody can find your product, does it matter?

JFC… Versus was so bad I totally forgot about them until you just mentioned it.

I worked for the cable company at that time and had an open cable box that they used for testing that had every channel, and *I* had trouble finding those early games.
