how the fuck are these teams allowed to just cancel contracts with no penalties? wtf is the contract actually for

There must be something in the CBA that if there is mutual agreement for the contract to be terminated, the team is no longer on the hook for the cap hit (not even a cap penalty for the Blues or Canucks :D ) Saad is leaving significant money on the table.

That is a huge gamble on his part with the hopes of getting an NHL contract. My only thought was he didn't want to play in the AHL after clearing waivers?

Mutual termination. Has always been an option, the player just usually doesn’t want to do that because he usually wont get that money elsewhere.

Which is definitely the case with Saad. Really ballsy move on his part.
