Boileryard Clarke is 172nd.
I have to admit, I love reading about and studying older players, and I had never heard of Boileryard Clarke. Good shit. That's why I make these threads, because they're era-neutral.

EDIT: I just looked him up. WTF. No wonder I had never heard of him. Don't waste my time with 1890's scrubs Bronco, because let me tell you, two can play at that game

Wow, I thought he set a single-season record, but it was his whole career at 57%. I'm surprised to see Hartnett on that list. I guess his dominant offense overshadowed his prowess behind the plate
Hartnett definitely deserves more credit than he gets.

So does Ernie Lombardi. His big slow ass was kinda high on the list too.

Won a batting title in '42 (?) but is largely (faultily) credited with losing a World Series for the Reds (I think) when he dropped a ball on a throw home.

We could look all this up, but I find it more fun sometimes just relying on memory. It kind of gives a real-life feel to it, like you just met a guy in Cooperstown

Welcome to my world Omar. Lol

There is so much misinformation rattling around in my brain. If I knew any better my life could be ruined.

Like the batting title that Ty Cobb didn't really win. I don't remember exactly what year it was, and I'm not going to look it up. Nobody else did for like 85 years anyway. Lol

How was Cooperstown btw? I met a guy and his family at Niagra Falls the weekend after inductions, from Cooperstown. They run away every year during inductions. I didn't even know how to react to that. And the HOF was literally in this guy's backyard growing.

I think the batting title was actually lost to Lajoie. Cobb would frequently sit out games in September with a "nagging hamstring" if he was a couple points ahead of his competition. Cobb is frequently vilified by contemporary baseball fans, but he's probably my favorite player who's not a Phillie (and by "favorite player who's not a Phillie- I mean I hope he has AC in hell).

Cooperstown was good. Nice little town and I got to spend good time with my dad, who doesn't know a whole town about baseball.

"During the fourth game of the 1939 World Series, in the 10th inning, with the score tied and runners on first and third, Joe DiMaggio singled. One run scored, then Reds outfielder Ival Goodman fumbled the ball. Yankees right fielder Charlie "King Kong" Keller, well known for his sturdy physique, beat the throw to catcher Lombardi and inadvertently hit the "The Schnozz" in his groin. Unfortunately for the Reds and Lombardi, he had failed to wear his protective cup and Lombardi was in pain and dazed. DiMaggio raced around the bases and scored while the ball was just a few feet away from the dazed Lombardi. The press was hugely critical of the sensitive catcher because of this and it came to be known as 'Lombardi's Big Snooze'."

Author James Vail wrote in 2001:

"To date, it seems that no one knows for certain who won that 1910 batting title. Total Baseball, which is now the official major-league record, lists both men at .384 in its seasonal section, but its player register has Lajoie at the same number and Cobb at .383—so even the various editors of that source do not, or cannot, agree."[66] Jon Wertheim wrote in Sports Illustrated 100 years after the event, "The statistics for the Detroit players had been crossed out and nullified. Every Detroit player, that is, except one: Ty Cobb. It takes something less than a detective to arrive at the conclusion that at some point Johnson (or someone in the league office, anyway) realized the error and decided to conceal it."

Cobb gets a real bad rap. (Not the sitting part. I'm sure that's true.)

Check his recent biography, it's a lot closer to reality than the movie or the biography it was made off. You can still claim him for Philly....

That's real cool you went with your Dad.

Ivan Rodriguez is more retroactively overrated than Ronald fucking Reagan. I mean, talk about stat-padding. .334 OBP, 104 wRC+:L

Don't let the idiotically liberal media cloud your young mind.

I was born in 1985 and Regan is easily the best president of my lifetime.

I was joking, just because I hear that from Liberals all the time. My dad was 23 in 1985

I think your list is fine. I'm a little surprised at how low Pudge rates, but not overly surpirsed with a low OBP and playing in TExas most of his career.

Yeah, and like I've said a lot, I (maybe undeservedly) perpetually underrate defense, even from defensive positions. I'd take Gabby Hartnett over Pudge every time (not a perfect example because stats say Gabby was a good defensive catcher, but whatever).

Yeah, I think in '58(?) he threw out 57% of runners or something, which is still a record. I, too, am too lazy to look it up. We should start a lazy group- hey, can you start it?

That was for his career, best all-time. Well above average range & fielding % too, fwiw. He started playing in the ***** League when he was 16, 10 years before he was allowed into MLB. Should count for something.. but I read your criteria... list doesn't look right without him, though.
