Thomas signed the contract at age 35 or older. The contract is on the books no matter what.

The contract is on the books for origionally agreed to duration. Under the previous CBA the Islanders wouldn't have the option to toll the contract past that duration if Thomas has officially filed all his paperwork for retirement.

Now there is talk the Islanders could either trade Streit, Okposo or Visnovsky somewhere. My guess is Streit because his salary at 4.1M is the same as his cap hit. The other two are paid less than their cap hit.

I'd take Streit in a Long Island minute.

correct but only until the end of the contract term if he officially retired. if not it hangs on their cap. just brutal really that this was allowed

(edit: not mad at you for your posts just the whole thing is wrong)

Like I said earlier, I'm not happy about it. The Islanders have been a laughingstalk for quite awhile. This trade only makes things worse. They can toll Thomas's contract for perpetuity. All this deal did was make sure the Islanders stay above the cap floor when they trade other high priced guys like Streit, Visnovsky & Okposo. It's BULLSHIT!!

I have nothing against Luongo personally. I just don't see him as an elite goalie like Brodeur or Roy. If he proves me wrong & all he has to do is win 1 cup to do so, I'll be happy to say so.

As for my team, I became a fan when I was a kid. I can't turn my back on them.

NHL's view on Thomas trade, from Bill Daly: ``As long as a Player has an active contract that he has the right to return to absent unusual circumstances, our view is that he remains a "hockey asset" that a Club has a right to trade or acquire.'' end quote

They better lose a 1st round pick if this gets rejected by the league or he doesn't play. Clear cap circumvention.

more wow

Bob McKenzie ✔ @TSNBobMcKenzie
Which is ideal for NYI. No acquisition price. NYI can toll contract to next year if they like, continue to get cap benefit in perpetuity

tolling contract ... ie like when they suspended Nabokov to make him honour the final year of his contract with them

if they toll the contract they can apply his contract to next year in order to meet the floor

what a sham

The league has approved the trade.

Seriously... We went through a lockout why exactly? Not even a month into the season and the owners are doing shady shit already.

It's strange Visnovsky reported today & had made comments about wanting to play in the playoffs when he said he was coming.

Visnovsky's cap hit is 5.6M. Maybe the Islanders acquired Thomas because they're about to trade Visnovsky to a contender? We shall see. I still call it a bullshit move & Wang can rot for all I care.

The league should refund the Devils the money they were fined and their first round pick based on the approval of this trade today.

Cheapest fucking owner in the league. Wang needs to be removed and the whoever is in charge of approving trades needs to be fired too. We've had hockey back for about a month and one team is already circumventing the cap(or making their best attempt at it).

Have you not been following Hockey since Wang took over the Islanders? He's been circumventing the cap for years. Why do you think the Islanders acquired Visnovsky? He's got a 5.6M cap hit while the team only has to pay him 3M.

I agree; it's one thing to try and keep costs down but run a competitive squad, but it's quite another to intentionally screw your team over because you aren't even trying to win.

The solution is obvious, though I'm not sure it's legal - have the NHL fine the Islanders the exact amount of the cap hit. They'll dump Thomas AND FAST.

Or just take a first round pick. I hear that's what they do when teams break the rules that don't really exist.

If the league had a problem with the trade they wouldn't have allowed it to happen.

The thing is, paying less than the cap hit isn't really circumvention - theoretically Visnovsky could be worth 10% of the cap ceiling even if he's paid less. He isn't, because he's Visnovsky, but the Isles could make a semi-decent case there. Not so much on the trading for a goalie who isn't going to play.

What they did here is like if the Flyers traded Pronger to the Isles for a draft pick. Sure, he COULD come back. But everyone knows he won't.

I'm all for shady deals - may the cream off the shady and corrupt rise to the top - this is the only way to flush them out.

As for the Islanders, they are treated as slush; a shell entity for the other teams in the league. This is where all the irregularities eventually end up; a bunch of assets off the balance sheet and what not.

As an accountant, I can appreciate the Islanders; as a fan of hockey, I cannot forgive David Volek or anything the franchise has done since then.

Honestly, the Isles would probably like that because those first rounders cost more than second rounders...
