Sweet, I've been wanting Tech to play in the preseason NIT for awhile now. Wish they could make one of those first two rounds better coincide with football. That's between the double Thursday games, so both weekends are open for most fans.

To keep the basketball trend going... Allan Chaney tweeted he has been cleared by a doctor in Philly.

"Ok before all the fans and HOKIE lovers spread the rumor that I am playing
this year

I have been cleared by the DOCTOR in Philly! Now I have to wait to see
what TECH says! So when I say I am deff playin, I am

I just don't know if I will be back here at TECH or not. No matter what I will
always be a #HOKIE"

I'm guessing he is saying he may not be back at VT if the tech doctors don't clear him to play. He obviously really wants to play. I hope he gets cleared by VT docs because this kid could be a stud. My friends that played against him before his ailment said that he was better than Jeff Allen. He would have to be eased back into the game since he's had so much time off, but having this kid playing would really help next year.

He also tweeted a little support for the fans worried he was leaving....

"I never said I was leaving yall! DOn't think that way"

Didn't know where to post this discussion so here looks good. I am really tired of every media person commenting on our non-conference schedule this year. It is weak, yes, but we have also played some of the biggest non-conference games in the country the last 5 years or so. If I am correct, we were supposed to have some bigger schools on this year's schedule until they backed out and we had to fill it in. We resume a better schedule next year with Pitt and Cincy and then Bama the following year. We let up one year with a new QB and catch so much crap for it. Frustrating.

Yeah I guessed it was football, but when you said pickup game it made me think basketball.

Honestly Dj Parker was throwing out a lot of good ideas on how to turn the spring game into an all weekend event (similar to what some of the SEC schools and fla st have) also talked about making the spring game somewhat of a "homecoming" for former players.

I think i read somewhere that Coach Cav might be organizing the event this year. Could be wrong. I have a hunch that with all of this push in improving recruiting we will see a different spring game. I'd really like to see them make it a huge event in blacksburg. They could turn downtown on Friday or Saturday night into a huge event. If they really improved it, we would probably see that stadium getting much closer to being full, and it would be more impressive for the tons of recruits that visit. Granted we're already much better than a majority of ACC schools, but this would just be another push towards getting to that "next level"

I could see a push to fill up Lane for the Spring Game. Right now it's a mix bag of fans in Blacksburg each spring. I'm there primarily for the game but enjoy the opportunity to tailgate. At the same time, I've known people to tailgate and not go the the spring game. I also can't forget to mention the significant number of alumni and young families that make it who usually can't make a real game. The first two groups will be always be the same and would largely be unaffected by any chage besides a total program collapse. They make it a priority and roughly the same amount of people will make the trip or not depending on other obligations. Their season ticket counterparts that don't come now, never will, because its just practice to them.

It is that third group that has the potential to expand massively.

I'd like to see a joint effort, with the university and the athletic department to turn this into something bigger. Combine those some of those SEC style spring game attractions with a few college or department homecomings. Maybe some town wide festivities, a big baseball series, or even a concert and fireworks show.

Heck, its not out of line IMO to move actual homecoming to the spring game. I know its traditionally fall, and could boost attendance if we one day fail to sell out tickets, but right now it's an afterthought to most outside of the greek community. The homecoming football games atmosphere lags anyway with the numbers of sororities soley there for halftime and photo shoots in the stands (no offense to those that are still there to see football). It won't happen, but I would support it if it did.

It would be awesome to have it be a homecoming event for former players. I wouldn't want to see actual homecoming in the spring though. That is a good tradition in the fall for the students and announcing it at a real game. Having all the former players and NFL guys walking around would be a big push for recruits. The current players would be able to mingle with recruits during the other activities during the weekend. Show the recruits what the student fan base is all about. Students would flock out to weekend event that is focused on football after a long cold winter.

Yeah i love the idea of turning it into an all weekend event. I am a season ticket holder but i make it out to all the scrimmages, spring game, etc etc etc. I like to use these events to take my young son, and let him experience lane stadium without the hustle and bustle of 70k.

Random thought(sorry didnt really have anywhere else to put this): Our coaching staff is a college football beast. I think we are all happy about the coaching changes as they relate to recruiting, but im equally as excited to see the results on the field. Im guessing that Brown will not only be a great players coach, but that he has picked up a few things to add to and/or tweak the playbook also. Its also pretty reassuring to know that Cav and Foster are there if there is anything he isnt sure about. The same thing can be said about Shane, he hasnt had a ton of experience coaching RB's but all those years on the other side of the ball have taught him what really hurts a defense. It also makes me feel good to know that he has the advice of a guy who has put 30 rb's in the nfl at his disposal anytime. I also really love the idea's of O'cain calling the plays and Stiney helping the OL. I have never had a problem with playbook/gameplan itself, but stinespring really never grasped the concept of "mixing it up". A young QB (lt) cant ask for much more than having his QB coach call the plays, O'cain sees the QB everyday and should know better than anyone their strengths and weakness.

Sidenote: we all know how great Frank, bud, Wiles, and TG are, but the guy who i think doesnt get the attention he deserves is Kevin Sherman. Lets be honest, our guys werent exactly 5* wr's coming in, but sherman has molded them into (in my bias opinion) one of the top wr groups in the country. Being that Boykin, Coale, and Roberts were his first group of recruits, im cant wait to see what he can do with the 2 incoming classes. <-------especially if we can add Diggs and/or Caleb to this class.
