Yea, it helps, but considering teams get so many picks, an extra one doesn't strike me as that huge a deal. It would be nice if teams with these competitive balance picks were allowed to spend what ever they want on them, and have it not reflected at all in the overall draft pool, that would be fun.

We got the 2nd comp pick after the first round, they come after the free agent comp picks though.

It's an extra pick before the second round though. I can't find the chart any more but there was a graphic floating around recently that showed the percentage of all-stars who were 1st round picks vs. later rounds. For pitchers it's a fairly large percent, but for hitters it's almost everyone who was drafted in round 1.
(just another clue that you're generally better off targeting position players in the first round)

A comp pick is nothing to sneeze at. Thankfully the Pirates got theirs in the first lottery. It could be an intriguing draft pick or it could be added to a trade package. I don't know exactly how they'll value them but it's not an insignificant asset to have.
