Offensive PI calls, Gronk, and collective head shaking.

What are your thoughts?

  • The league seems to be singling out the patriots for pushoffs, legit or not. The metrics support it.

  • The league is not singling out anybody. You suck, Rock.

He braced his shoulders when the defensive play made contact and cut right. Did he extend his arms at that point? I think not. The arm was trailing as he cut right and was already on his way. "Flop" by the defensive player,

LOL. OK, you won't be convinced, but it doesn't matter because the ref saw it the same way I did when I watched it live. It looked like Gronk pushed off. Maybe his arm was just "trailing" in a way that looked like a push-off but I remain skeptical about that.

Kind of like Shaq with the Lakers during his 3 year run winning titles there. He was so big and so strong, that just turning around and bumping into someone would send them flying.
This is almost exactly what I was going to post.

You extend your arm on a break, you're likely to get called for OPI, whether you actually push off or not. If Gronk says he isn't changing the way he plays, he can expect to continue to get called for OPI.

Where is the thread detailing Von Miller getting held about 10 times and only 1 being called? Wait, there isn't one because complaining about the refs is for pussies.

I think he'd be smart to say it is something he is aware of and is working on it in practice to avoid getting penalties. Maybe the refs would hear that and start giving the benefit of the doubt. When he says "I ain't changing the way I play" I think it gives the refs an excuse to throw flags.

If we went over every play with a fine tooth comb the way is being done with the Gronk OPI you could probably find a dozen holds that weren't called on either team. The refs can't call everything thank God.

Unless someone complains about you of course.

The problem in general is the refs are scared to death they're going to miss a call. They should rethink some of these penalties in order to reduce their number.

I thought it was a bad call until I watched the replay. He pushed off.

Like it or not once you get a reputation its hard to shake in the NFL. Look at James Harrison, or Suh, or anyone else who gets a rep for being dirty. They get watched closer than other players because of their rep. Gronk has a rep of pushing off, so ref's watch him more for that. We deal with the same thing in Seattle. Sherman gets called for holding all the time, mostly because of his rep.

He doesn't get paid for his mental horsepower. That's pretty clear.
