Offensive PI calls, Gronk, and collective head shaking.

What are your thoughts?

  • The league seems to be singling out the patriots for pushoffs, legit or not. The metrics support it.

  • The league is not singling out anybody. You suck, Rock.

You're right, allow me to correct myself:

Everyone from the north eastern part of the United States thinks that Gronk is being targeted, therefore he is definitely being targeted.

I can assure that the New York media does not think Gronk is being targeted.

And he is being targeted insofar as he keeps committing penalties and now they focus on him.

At some point he will realize that he can't push off.

No usually we get a mix of calls that go and don't go our way just like every other team.

I'll bet you especially liked the mix where, the first time the 'tuck rule' was ever called, it won the Patriots an AFCCG. And the second time it was ever called, it won the Patriots a Superbowl. In the same year.

the broncos werent called for a single offensive penalty all game. the pats were called for 5 in the 4th quarter alone.

that being said, the patriots have been called for (or rather, had an offensive PI call accepted on them) 9 times.
the second closest team has 4.

gronk? well, hes been called for offensive PI 6 times. 6. thats more than 30 other TEAMS in the league...

mull that over. the second closest guy to gronk has 2.

now, football fans know the league has put a call out to refs to watch pushing off. this year, they seem to be focusing on the pats and particularly, gronk. justified or not?

Here are some links to enjoy:

Are refs holding Rob Gronkowski to higher standard with interference calls?

Rob Gronkowski Injury Never Should Have Happened And Other Leftover Patriots Thoughts

now, I'm not saying its a "conspiracy" vs the pats and gronk...but its fairly obvious to most toddlers that something is amiss here.

What are your thoughts?

Brady was beaten by a QB who was being booed by his own fans.

Brady was beaten by a QB making his second career start.

Pats fans always say that when it gets cold and snows, Brady always has the edge because he is a 'better cold weather player'. But he lost the cold weather edge to a punk ass kid.

QB's dont beat QB's, they beat defenses.

ive always hated that argument.

Word. 'Brady has beaten Manning more times.' Blah blah blah. Brady has also had homefield advantage in 9 of the 11 regular-season meetings when both QBs were healthy.

Not saying it's you. I am just agreeing with you that having QBs compete against each other makes no sense.

Similar to how I feel that no single player is responsible for a team's success in the NFL.

like "pitcher matchups"

same deal

they face batters, not eachother (unless you count the NL)

You mean like the previous week when the third time in NFL history one team was penalized for over 100 yards and the other team had zero penalties called on them? That would be the Broncos having over 100 yards and the Bears had nary a flag thrown against them.

Yeah the refs have been pretty bad this year and they are now more of a negative influence on the game than ever before.

I'm sure why although I'm inclined to think it's the NFL front offices since they've already demonstrated known buffoonery.

I also think they created a situation where refs feel compelled to over-react and that's how we go to where we are today.

once the officials dictate the outcome of a game instead of the players, you know youre in trouble.

I agree with this. The lack of consistency is really frustrating.

It was actually called earlier that year in a different game... And called for the Patriots in the the division round actually. I don't remember it being invoked in the Superbowl though.

You just think the Patriots have been particularly blessed by the refs.

But clearly you are so blinded by anger and rage that you can't think clearly...

Most of the time I just grin and bear it like most fans but do I think there is some point of emphasis to look at Gronk more in terms of OPI? I do.

Yeah this notion where refs decide to "concentrate" on some new aspect of play is baffling. Some like player safety at least make some sense and has a purpose.

Did anyone really care about offensive pass interference before this year?? When did this become such a hot topic?

I find it hard to believe that coaches really cared about this sh*t.

I could be cynical and think it was a wishlist by coaches against the Patriots but that couldn't possibly be true, could it? Could it?

"oh the Patriots receivers always push off"
"And their rub plays, they're always getting free that way"
"Drives me crazy"
"Uh huh"

:D

Well, I suppose if you want serious discussion, the rules have become so complicated, that they're asking the officials to do an impossible job.

It was simple in the old days. You could mug the receiver all the way down the field as long as the ball wasn't in the air. If the ball was in the air, you couldn't touch him. Simple to call.

Today they have to worry about whether the receiver is within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage. Contact is obviously allowed beyond that, but how much? Pick plays. Pushing off. Are the blockers making contact before the catch on screens? (they usually do, but it isn't called)

No win, thankless job.

The issue was whether Gronk is being focused on for OPI.

CLEARLY bad calls happen in all games and all teams, including the Patriots, get their share of good and bad calls.

That doesn't mean that there weren't plenty of other reasons the Patriots lost.

I don't think Brady had a particularly bad game given the circumstances and opponent. They had a 14 point lead at the beginning of the 3rd quarter and even when the Bronco's took advantage of the good bounces and made some big plays to take the lead at the end the game he was also able to bring the team down to tie it at the end of the regulation. I thought it was a good game.

Very exciting (well except for for the Gronk hit of course)
