Understood. I am a Civil War armchair historian myself..., but more so World War 1. Naval history would be a weakness for me.

Not trying to agenda post but if you haven't seen it, "Come and See" is a great film and is exactly the opposite of what you talked about with "entertainment". You probably have seen it or know what I am referring to.

I think WW2 Eastern Front is something that we know little about as Americans. Especially, the partisan effort against the German Army. Let me clarify, I don't know a lot about the Eastern Front for WW2. The Red Army during WW2 is complex and you almost need a decoder ring to have a good grasp of what happened. Or...at least I do. That being said, we learn little to nothing about the Red Army contribution during WW2 outside of bulk numbers and statistics. That is just my opinion. Some of those Soviet generals were prodigious commanders.
I am weak on WWI ... the CW and WWII captured held much more interest.

I agree regarding WWII on the eastern front. I have not seen Come and See, have to check it out sometime.

Of course than there is Brian Boru the last King of Ireland, Viking invasions and troubles in case you have too much times on your hands.

I am not sure Zhukov was a genius per se .Soviet and now Russian tactics now rely on numbers . Guderian saw what combined arms can do
Personal opinion, but the Germans threw their very best at the Russians and were beaten at several key battles that Zhucov oversaw: Leningrad, Moscow, and Stalingrad. He was also the architect behind the Battle of Kursk. Not to mention, he did take Berlin (with Konev on the left flank).

I agree that he used his numbers to his advantage but Zhukov beat Von Paulus, Von Bock, Von Manstein (with Vatutin's help), and Von Leeb. Zhucov was amazing.

Agreed that mass numbers had a big part of it...but Zhukov was a great defense commander. These are ALL my personal opinions.

Tactically I think grant and lee were ahead of their time and in WW2 Patton was the real genius along with Rommel
All 3 of us (Sportster, you, and myself) could talk for days about this...LOL. Always good to chat about military history. I always learn more from others than hearing myself babble on.

I agree with everything you said about Lee and Grant. Forrest and George Thomas were brilliant as well. My opinion.

CW history is great. Who do you admire or appreciate?

The Eastern Front is depressing and hard to follow. Eastern Front WW1 is a nightmare as you have to keep up with multiple nations.

Come and See is depressing as all get out. As a military man, you will be able to follow what is going on more than I did.

WW1 is where technology was ahead of tactics hence the trenches

Most of the early French command (Joffre, Pau, Gallani) was trained in Napoleonic tactics. How many men died in a bayonet charge against maxim machine gun emplacements at the Battle of the Frontiers? Awful.

anyone want to bet he was vaccinated?

Freaking tragic. I am not a Lebron fan but he seems to be a good dad with little family issues. I pray Bronny recovers.
