Series preview: Mets at Phillies - Mets Blog - ESPN New York

FIRST PITCH: Bartolo Colon may not be going anywhere until the offseason anyway, but whether he is eligible to be traded this month remains to be determined.

ESPN’s Jayson Stark reports that while Curtis Granderson is currently on waivers, the Mets have not yet put Colon through the process.

If a player is claimed, the Mets can dump the contract on that team, work out a trade, or pull the player back. Pulling the player back makes him ineligible to be dealt this month. If a player clears waivers, he can be dealt without restriction in August.

Meanwhile, Colon (10-9, 4.12 ERA) again bids for his 200th career win Friday. He opposes Philadelphia Phillies right-hander A.J. Burnett (6-11, 4.16) at 7:05 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park, in the opener to a four-game series.

With a victory, Colon would become the third active pitcher to reach the 200-win plateau, joining Tim Hudson (213 career wins) and CC Sabathia (208). Colon also would become the third Dominican-born pitcher, joining Juan Marichal (243) and Pedro Martinez (219).

Two pitchers have notched No. 200 as a Met: Orel Hershiser and Martinez.

Huzzah for Barto.

Really demoralized after that homestand. Have done well against Philly all year, but not much else to play for except to get Colon that 200th and ruin somebody else's season.

The number 200 isn’t just a theme for Bartolo Colon.

Second baseman Daniel Murphy is now on pace for 200 hits after his three-hit game Thursday afternoon. Murphy has an NL-best 142 hits through the Mets' first 115 games, which projected over 162 games hits that milestone number on the nose.

It took Murphy a little work to get there. He’s 23-for-51 over his past 10 games and enters tonight’s game with four straight multihit games.

This marks the sixth time a Mets player has had at least 142 hits through his team’s first 115 games. Jose Reyes did it most recently, in 2007, 2008 and 2011, but reached 200 hits only in 2008, when he had 204. Edgardo Alfonzo had 146 hits to this point in 1999 and finished with 191. Lance Johnson had 153 hits in 1996 and finished with a club-record 227.

Johnson and Reyes are the only Mets to have 200 hits in a season and are also the only Mets to lead the National League in hits.

David Wright's high is 196, done in 2007. John Olerud had the most of anyone who didn’t reach 200, with 197 in 1998.

No one in the majors reached the 200-hit plateau last season, with Matt Carpenter of the Cardinals and Adrian Beltre of the Rangers both coming up one short.

The ZiPS projection developed by Dan Szymborski and used by ESPN.com pegs Murphy as coming up a little bit short. It has him finishing with 191 hits.

Do it FFS...don't just talk about it.

PHILADELPHIA -- The Mets are considering releasing Chris Young and promoting Matt den Dekker from Triple-A Las Vegas soon rather than waiting until rosters expand on Sept. 1 and carrying both players, sources told ESPNNewYork.com

It's unresolved whether the Mets actually will pull the trigger, but it is being debated.

Regardless, there is a legitimate desire to promote den Dekker. Den Dekker's .334 average leads the Pacific Coast League. Assistant GM John Ricco on Friday complimented den Dekker's reduced strikeout rate this season (64 Ks in 332 Triple-A at-bats).

Once den Dekker is promoted, the Mets plan to give him a good look in left field -- not let him wilt on the bench. At that point, Kirk Nieuwenhuis would recede to more of a pinch-hitting/bench role. Nieuwenhuis for the time being will be the one getting the serious look in left field at the expense of Young.

Young (.205/.283/.346) is only signed through the end of this season. He has roughly $2 million left on his $7.25 million contract.

• If David Wright doesn't snap out his doldrums soon ...then TC really needs to get him the hell out of the 3 spot in the batting order.....he's killing us there right now.

• We should also root for the Braves this weekend as they play the Nats in Atlanta...we could pick up a few games if things align and work out properly....(but I know its a longshot).

Happy Bday, Matt d D.

PHILADELPHIA -- On Sunday, Matt den Dekker makes his first major league start since June 14. And Terry Collins acknowledged this time the outfielder will get a legitimate look, unlike previous cameos in which den Dekker was filling in for an injured player.

The Mets designated Chris Young for assignment on Friday and intend to give den Dekker a regular look in left field against right-handed pitching for the foreseeable future.

Den Dekker, who turned 27 on Sunday, was leading the Pacific Coast League in batting at .334.

"We brought him up for a purpose this time," Collins said.

Collins noted den Dekker will be tested quickly. The Mets exclusively see right-handed pitching through the next series, including Doug Fister, Jordan Zimmermann and Stephen Strasburg in a three-game series against the Washington Nationals that begins Tuesday at Citi Field.

"If it gets better than that, tell me who it is," Collins said. "So he's going to get challenged."

PHILADELPHIA -- Jenrry Mejia had a doctor examine his cranky calf Saturday, and the Mets are confident the issue is a cramp, not a pull, Terry Collins said.

Collins added that his closer is available for Sunday's matinee against the Phillies. Jeurys Familia handled Saturday's save after Mejia pitched the previous two days with calf tightness.

Collins said Mejia will need to be monitored in the short term to gauge his availability on any given day.
