FIRST PITCH: After a day off to put the weekend sweep to the Pittsburgh Pirates behind them, the New York Mets open an interleague series against theBaltimore Orioles on Tuesday at Camden Yards.

Jacob deGrom (11-6, 2.03 ERA) opposes right-hander Kevin Gausman (2-4, 4.48) in the 7:05 p.m. ET opener of the two-game series.

Baltimore (61-56) is one of only two teams on the Mets’ remaining schedule with a winning record. The other is the Yankees, who visit Citi Field Sept. 18-20.

The Mets (63-55) maintain a 4½-game lead over the Washington Nationals atop the NL East.

New York Mets Morning Briefing - Mets Blog - ESPN

Right-hander Logan Verrett is expected to join the New York Mets in Baltimore to serve as a reliever, although the team has not announced the corresponding move.

Verrett, 25, allowed one run on four hits and four walks in 12 1/3 innings earlier this season with the Mets. Despite his success, he was dispatched to Triple-A Las Vegas in early July when the Mets needed to clear a roster spot for the return ofJenrry Mejia from his original PED suspension.

Beyond the contributions from closer Jeurys Familia and setup man Tyler Clippard, the Mets' relief corps has performed erratically of late.

Verrett spent most of spring training with the Orioles, after being selected by that club in the Rule 5 draft.

Bobby P. to the DL. (fatigue)

New York Mets reliever Bobby Parnell is headed to the disabled list as the corresponding move for Logan Verrett's promotion from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Parnell had a rough weekend against the Pittsburgh Pirates, suffering two losses.

In 10 relief appearances since July 22, Parnell is 0-3 with a 14.14 ERA and .429 opponent batting average.

Parnell's difficulties are a reminder that not every pitcher has a smooth return from Tommy John surgery. Parnell had the procedure on April 8, 2014.

There has been no particular setback prompting Parnell to land on the DL. Instead, Parnell has been deemed to be suffering from fatigue.

NEW YORK METS (63-55, first place/NL East) at BALTIMORE ORIOLES (61-56, third place/AL East)

Tuesday: RHP Jacob deGrom (11-6, 2.03 ERA) vs. RHP Kevin Gausman (2-4, 4.48), 7:05 p.m. ET

Wednesday: RHP Noah Syndergaard (7-6, 3.07) vs. RHP Ubaldo Jimenez (9-7, 3.92), 7:05 p.m. ET

ORIOLES SHORT HOPS

  • Catcher Matt Wieters may return to the lineup Tuesday, although potentially as the designated hitter. Wieters has missed five straight games with a right hamstring strain. He ran the bases Monday. The Orioles have received solid contributions from their other backstops. Caleb Joseph primarily has started minus Wieters. The Orioles are 38-5 when Joseph produces at least one RBI. Meanwhile, Baltimore-born Steve Clevenger, promoted entering the weekend with Wieters sidelined, homered Monday for the first time since June 29, 2012. The three-run shot against Sonny Gray helped the Orioles to a 4-2 win that completed a four-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics.

  • The Orioles acquired outfielder Gerardo Parra from the Milwaukee Brewersat the non-waiver trade deadline July 31 for minor league right-hander Zach Davies. Parra is hitting .292 with three homers and five RBIs in 65 at-bats since the swap. He has started 10 times in right field and twice in left field with Baltimore.

  • Chris Davis has 34 homers. That ranks second in the majors, trailing only Seattle’s Nelson Cruz (36). Davis’ 89 RBIs lead the majors. Davis has hit eight career homers onto Eutaw Street. That total is the most in the ballpark’s history, two ahead of runner-up Luke Scott.

  • Ex-Mets reliever Darren O'Day has made 10 consecutive scoreless appearances, spanning 10 2/3 innings.

  • Infielder Ryan Flaherty is hitless in his last 34 at-bats. The franchise record for an Orioles position player is 0-for-41 by Willy Miranda in 1956, according to the Baltimore Sun.

  • Gausman’s last start came last Wednesday in Seattle opposite Hisashi Iwakuma, who tossed a no-hitter.

  • While the Mets face only two teams currently above .500 the remainder of the season (the Orioles and Yankees), Baltimore has the exact opposite schedule in terms of strength. Only two teams currently with sub-.500 records remain on the Orioles’ schedule: the Boston Red Sox for six games and theWashington Nationals for three games.

  • The Orioles produced a franchise-record-matching 26 hits in an 18-2 win against Oakland on Sunday.
