This ^^^^^^ Biggest problem with the Skins is we have a bumbling idiot for a GM that can n will override everything n everyone whenever the unction hits him. Hire a HC and a GM or a GM and a HC, and than establish both their roles. My personal opinion is that your GM has to have an eye for talent whereas your HC has to have the goods to coach/use that talent. And since he's the one who's in the trenches so to speak with that talent. He needs to make it known to the GM what type of team he wants to establish and type of talent he believes would work best to achieving that goal.

Far as Sty's question. Given my preference, I'd love to build an OL first if I could. Though I think my Skins fandom figures significantly into that. Due to the Hogs being the biggest constant during the Gibbs/Beathard era. And while I agree with @Sportster 72 that the NFL world of woulda, coulda, shoulda is littered with 1st rd can't miss QBs who missed terribly. @gkekoa is on point as well with your best opportunity to get a stud QB coming in the high picks of the 1st rd. And there have been some can't miss types drafted in the 1st that hit the bullseye from jump-street. And if the opportunity comes along where you're in position to acquire one. You need to not hesitate. pull the trigger and get him while the gettin is good.

I love the OL and think championships are made there. That being said, a good OL will prevent you from getting the QB with high probability of success.

The good OL will get an average QB picking at 16. The best QB prospects go before that. They don’t all pan out but the chances are better.

OK, I see what you're saying.

If you are good at the LOS , you can win with a decent qb .

Is this a chicken or egg question? Perhaps, but curious minds want to know. You're rebuilding from scratch, what comes first, the QB or guys to protect him when you eventually get him?

On the one hand you can get your QB but risk destroying him because you have no line to protect him and no way to discover if he is "THAT" guy. On the other, You just HAVE to have "THAT guy! What do you do?
You just described what we already have. DH and no oline. Just ask Alex Smith.

Yep!
My point is that with an highly ranked offensive line that can both pass and run block, QB, becomes far less important in terms of being an elite one.

One other thing to consider in light of the Burrows injury. If your QB is out for some reason, every game that you play without him , you're still a threat to win it, by pounding the rock an burning clock. All you would need is a QB who's moderately sufficient.

I just wish we would do one or the other. We’ve had neither for over 2 decades.

You think Collins has had a sudden change of heart about the possible move? Cuz according to the article. It didn't seem to sparkle with Collins when the Giants proposed it to him.

It is very true. Here is the history.

Now, I know you will point to names like Brady and Wilson. In Brady’s draft, only Pennington was drafted in round 1 and he was a good QB. There were 11 QBs taken after him. Brady and Marc Bulger were the only ones to make noise.

2012 was an anomaly. The first round saw four QBs taken. The first two had their careers derailed with injury. The third is unheralded but wins, when healthy. The guys after round 1 include Wilson, Cousins, and Foles; however, these rounds also include 4 more QBs who sucked or never got a chance to prove they suck.

Yeah, Bulger wasn't a bad QB. He was good. Just the entire OL went to shit and they never replaced Bruce or Holt. By 2009, he was done. Sacked to much.

Always looking to build the trenches regardless. Perhaps that QB falls into your lap but whomever it is, needs protection (ala Joe Burrow). As for this year, you have a fantastic opportunity to land one of the best MLB in the draft, grab him at 11. Ron is bringing in a vet anyway to lead this team so use a later round pick on QB to develop behind said vet starter and TH. This team has 2 glaring holes, MLB and WR1A. Perhaps that WR comes in the form of a vet prove it 1 yr deal or snag a Mike Williams or Christian Kirk type of player in FA. You should always look to improve your secondary and we took our fair share of hits with Fuller and Jackson last year. I believe a very good player at CB will be available in round 2. This draft is deeper than most recent years at OL, take best available OL there which is a good spot to pick up a Guard even though its looking like Charles may become the swing tackle if we don't find someone else.

Move on from Collins... He is useful in the box but not back in space. That's called limited. I thought RR wanted guys who were multi-tooled? Resign McCain, teach the younger LB's (namely Forrest/Hudson) Collins' role and let Davis, Holcomb & Dean kill it at LB.

You build the lines, otherwise you end up with a David Carr situation

I would have drafted Parson's that high last year. I do not think Dean is his equal.

According to the question, i chose to build the lines. It will take me longer to win a championship, but once i hit at qb or get in free agency, ive put the organization closer to the ultimate goal. It was terrible seeing what happened to Burrow in Tennessee and LA. I enjoyed the superbowl but man, Cincy should've won

I created this thread 2 years ago because at the time Washington had neither QB nor a consistent offensive line to protect him. Let us examine what has been done since that time before answering the question as if the situation remains unchanged. (For the offensive line it hasn't)
