And even if they weren't going to sign MJ because they already had too much invested in the line, then they could have at least spent that money elsewhere. But they didn't, and we know they won't.

The only way to justify making one unit (the backbone) of the team worse by not retaining players is to sign better players to make another unit of the team better.

The bottom line is the only plan the Bengals have is to try to save Brown as much money as possible while still fielding a semi-competitive team. There's no justifying their actions.

I couldn't agree more.

There is no excuse for their strategy..... And it's high comedy that they are trying to pin their lack of action on Andy Dalton's representation.

I'd just like to reiterate that the bengals.com message board is a laugh riot. I recommend being drunk while reading, though.

I see you're making some friends over there.

I might need to make a handle over there for when I've been drinking heavy...... I'm a fairly happy drunk -- I might like the optimism over there.

Hobbs latest fluff piece:

Lewis declares Bengals in the race

Funny notes:

--Marvin already breaking out the inspirational talk.
-- Not worried that other teams are actually trying - We plan to rule the draft!
-- Newhouse was signed because he's Dalton's best friend. I'm not kidding. God love the bengals.

I was literally in the process of copy/pasting that article into a new thread. I think this has to be my favorite article of all time.

The war analogies were terrific..... I wonder if Hobbs teaches creative writing to 7th graders during the offseason.

Forget that the other teams have upgraded their talent, the Bengals have continuity with their roster.

Lewis isn't worried, yet a coach who just won the SB a year ago isn't taking moves around the AFC as lightly...

BTW -- The average NFL career length for a first round draft pick is approximately 9 years (attributed to Goodell at some talk he gave -- Not sure if it's accurate). That means a first round pick can be locked into one team for about 2/3 of their career, with a little less than half of the career being a rookie contract.

It's interesting to see the effect it's having on the draft.

53 underclassmen declared in 2010. 73 declared in 2013. 98 declared this year.

Players don't care about staying in school to improve their draft stock. They just want out of their first contract while they're still as young as possible

I'm not sure that's really saying much. Why would there be a jump from 2013 to 2014 when nothing changed between those years. I believe the general focus of athletes in this country is more on sports than education than it was even 5 years ago. And more and more people believe they can make it big whether it be influence from their family or friends. You would likely see the same trends in basketball which is why they're again debating pushing the minimum eligibility age up 1 more year.

As for the average length of career for 1st round picks being 9 years, that's an average for a reason. You have some players that are out of the league after 4-6 years. Other players that are out after 12-14 years. The players that will be "transitioned" (5th year) or "franchised" (6th year) are the players that will last 12-14 years in the league at a minimum. They'll make $50-60 million before their first big contract. And likely will make it to a 2nd.

Nonetheless, the fact of the matter is, the transition and franchise are rarely used. And when they are, they're typically used simply to buy a little more time to settle negotiations.

This plan sounds fine.... Make him prove it in his contract year. But if that's your ultimate goal, why are you saving cap season THIS season. You don't have to pay AJ for another two (if you pick up the 5th year option). Burfict only qualifies for restricted free agency after this season -- He's easy to lock up. Plenty of room to cut a big check to Andy Dalton next season if he performs this season..... All while helping him by keep your best free agents.

Nobody is 'bitching just to bitch.' There is not a good reason you can give me as to why we had MJ and Collins walk while holding onto a bunch of cap space for this season.

As I said in that same exact post, I am curious as to how they justify spending to the floor with Green and Dalton still on rookie contracts, Michael Johnson and his 11 million are gone, Collins is gone, several other FA's left, while not expensive or a major part of our starting team, that is all money that is available.

I am okay goign in the direction they are going, as long as they can prove they are going to spend the money somewhere else this year at least to warrant resting on Dalton's contract.

Dalton still needs to prove he can step up, and maybe a contract year can be that year. Worked for Flacco. Of course Dalton probably gets us to the AFC Championship game this year where we lose, he gets his monster pay day, and then becomes the post-contract Flacco we are now dealing with for 6-8 years.

I know everyone is trying to compare the Dalton situation to Flacco, but let's just remember 2 very important things:
1-Flacco had actually won playoff games before his Super Bowl run.
2-Flacco also has the G.O.A.T. Dennis Pitta on his team.

I doubt 20 year old Collegiate athletes came into the process with an idea of how to "beat" the new CBA in its first year. Do I think one's developing... yes, definitely. When a number one overall pick could earn an 80 million dollar contract there was a much bigger incentive to stay in school and improve your draft stock. Now the incentive is to get out of your first contract at an earlier age so you can be as young as possible for your 2nd and 3rd contract. There was basically no growth in the number of underclassmen for 6 years, now it's almost doubled in 4?

There definitely is a trend. There's no question about that. I can also see that once a player has a solid season in college, there is even less reason now to risk a letdown season.

Btw, can you provide the link for the numbers?

Same thing happened in the NBA in the mid nineties..... The owners got tired of paying huge contracts to lottery picks and went to a rookie wage scale. Early entries bloomed until the NBA got tired of owners spending picks on guys that weren't close to ready for NBA talent. Now it's a bunch of one and dones. Regardless, the players have no incentive to stay in college - If you are a lottery pick, your salary is basically set and you'd be better off getting started so you can get that second deal.
