I have no idea what most of you are bitching about. We knew for a fact that the Bengals (Mike and Marvin) were wanting Dalton back for the long haul. Not exactly sure why anyone is suprised. However, with Dalton's track record recently, especially in the playoffs, there is a touch of a concern on spending franchise QB money on him. If you are going to unload a wad on him, make him prove he can improve, and if he can't, then you have an easier decision moving forward if he leaves FA.

Seems like logical common sense to me. I think some of you like to bitch just to bitch.

Also, sounds like a damn smart plan with Green as well. I would go that exact same route.

However, I would personally be interested to see how they even spend to a floor of 89% when you are still working on Green and Dalton's rookie contract, and Michael Johnson and his 11 million are gone, along with Collins, who was not making that much, but between him and these other free agents now gone. I would think we have a decent amount more to spend.

I think we need to look into signing Burfict long term. He has one year left as well, and is the leader of our defense, the heart and soul. He may not be Ray Lewis, but he is OUR Ray Lewis and we cannot afford to lose the best LB we have had since a young Takeo Spikes.

I think we are all going about this the wrong way.

Maybe we should start appreciating the hard work that Brown puts in to pull off these moves and still come out like a rose...

All this time, we've focused on winning, playoffs, and championships. We've been misguided!!!

Whodey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess we posted at about exactly the same time. :)

I do think people should appreciate some of the work Brown has done, along with Marvin as to what we have now versus what we used to have. It hasn't been what we want, but it has been so much better than looking at who are we going to draft as of the end of September.

"We are hopeful we can get a deal done that doesn't preclude us from doing everything else we also want to continue to do — and soon — because we are sitting on a chunk of cap in order to get him done and continue to put the team together around him," Lewis said.

"Let's get something that works for everyone and enables us to keep tackles in front of you, receivers on the outside, guys on the other side of the football," Lewis said.

In today's NFL a franchise can turn around in a season or two. We still haven't won a playoff game since 1991. I'll appreciate what Mike and Marvin are doing as soon as we make a playoff run of some kind. Until then, it's just the same shit different year, and I'm going to be critical of them, as they deserve.

This plan sounds fine.... Make him prove it in his contract year. But if that's your ultimate goal, why are you saving cap season THIS season. You don't have to pay AJ for another two (if you pick up the 5th year option). Burfict only qualifies for restricted free agency after this season -- He's easy to lock up. Plenty of room to cut a big check to Andy Dalton next season if he performs this season..... All while helping him by keep your best free agents.

Nobody is 'bitching just to bitch.' There is not a good reason you can give me as to why we had MJ and Collins walk while holding onto a bunch of cap space for this season.

Ridiculous. 31 NFL teams have won playoff games since our last win. During that stretch we went 12 years without a winning record. Four playoff appearances in five years is an impressive feat..... It would be more impressive if the club wasn't simply satisfied with being better than their inept past.

I can understand MJ walking. They've had a plan in place, and with extensions to Atkins and Dunlap, I don't think they wanted to tie up another big contract to the line. You still have pretty good depth there.

Collins could have been tagged this year, easily. Maybe he wouldn't have been worth the tag, that can be debated, but they certainly had enough room for 1 year to tag him with minimal hit, and probably still could have extended Dalton with room left over.

It's a perfect storm for Mike and Marvin. They know the fanbase isn't solidly behind Dalton to begin with, so he becomes the perfect scapegoat for their evil plan. They throw him under the bus, and when he sucks like we can be pretty sure he will, and the team fails again to win a playoff game, they are vindicated. Dalton either signs the lowball offer or they go another way. Either way Mike saves huge dollars and Marvin gets another extension.

Things could be worse...

Cleveland Browns won't rule out drafting two QBs - ESPN

Yeah, I saw this and just shook my head. It's like when the Timberwolves drafted two PG's a few years ago...of course, neither worked out.

You would think at some point the Browns would get at least 1 QB choice correct. If they take Manziel then I'm sure we will all continue shaking our heads.

I politely disagree.

They have an all-pro tackle (Atkins) recovering from a midseason ACL injury. Not a sure thing.

They have an aging, serviceable vet DE (Geathers) coming back after missing an entire season. Not a sure thing.

They have an unproven second year player (Hunt) that is a project until further notice. Not a sure thing.

They have a nice locked up DE (Dunlap) that tends to get nagging injuries.

They have a bust (Still). They have two average players (Peko and Thompson) and a guy that's terrific on third downs (Gilberry).

To me there is a lot of uncertainty there. Michael Johnson was a guy that played more than 90% of all plays -- You could easily argue that he was are most versatile guy on the line and he was rarely injured. The defensive line was the strength of this team for the past 4 or 5 years.... While it may seem excessive to spend too much on one unit, I think you do it when it's the best part of your team and when it's the unit that probably accounts for as much of your defensive success as anything else.

We're due.... I think we're looking at a shitty Reds season, followed by a shitty Bengals season. Then we'll watch the Bearcats shoot bricks for 4 months while playing the old conference USA.

Things were getting too weird in Cincinnati with all the winning. We need to go back to our old ways.

The Reds will be lucky to finish .500. Same for the Bungles.

I know nothing of the UC recruit class other than we got the #100 prospect.

Thank God for the Browns.................:laugh3:

Right? No matter how bad it gets, there's still the Browns.

If the Browns ever make it to the top of the division then I might consider watching the WNBA instead...

Those are all valid points. I still think they will be OK there, but also the point still stands, if they didn't want to tie up another major contract on the line...

But, all of those are valid points.

I still say, if nothing else, they should have tagged Collins for one year. With the increase in the cap that no one expected and cash over cap...they wouldn't have even had to dig into what they though their cap was going to be before all this happened.

This is a certainty.

Who is going to score next year? Sanders? Guyn? Those are our two Seniors. Shaq Thomas shows the most offensive talent, but he's going to have to go from 3rd 4th guy to the main guy...I don't know that I see it.

I am putting the over/under on points scored per game for UC next year at 52.5.

And even if they weren't going to sign MJ because they already had too much invested in the line, then they could have at least spent that money elsewhere. But they didn't, and we know they won't.

The only way to justify making one unit (the backbone) of the team worse by not retaining players is to sign better players to make another unit of the team better.

The bottom line is the only plan the Bengals have is to try to save Brown as much money as possible while still fielding a semi-competitive team. There's no justifying their actions.
