Is there strategic value in not playing Merriweather and putting him on injured reserve to give him extra time to heal but also keep a roster spot open for one of the younger guys in the secondary who obviously could use some more real time game experience? I don't really understand how IR affects roster numbers after final cuts but does it give you another 3-4 weeks to keep/cut someone?

If you put him on IR, he is done for the season. You can put him on PUP which means he sits for a minimum of 6 weeks, but can't practice at all with the team.

Looks like safety again this year is going to be our achilles heel.

There is designated to return IR now, added as of last year. Last year we used that designation on our long snapper

Didn't realize that. Is there a minimum time they must spend on designated IR?

New NFL Injured/Reserve (IR) Rule - For Dummies

IR list rules summary
Following are the main points regarding the new IR list rule changes:

Only players with a “major injury” who are placed on the IR list after 4 p.m. EST on Tuesday, September 4, 2012, or during the season are eligible to be reactivated later in the season.

A major injury is described as an injury that renders the player unable to practice or play football for at least six weeks — or 42 calendar days — from the date of injury.

A player who is placed on the IR list after 4 p.m. EST on Tuesday, September 4, 2012, must be immediately “designated for return” at the time he is placed on the list. That designation must appear on that day’s Personnel Notice.

That designated player is eligible to return to practice if he has been on the IR list for at least six weeks from the date he was placed on Reserve. He is eligible to return to the active list if has been on the IR list for at least eight weeks from the date he is placed on Reserve.

^^^^Please don't read anything in to the site that the above comes from. I didn't know the exact rule either, so I googled it and that's the first thing I found.

Thanks for posting that. Off the top of my head I remembered it as 8 weeks, but that says 6.

They just need to determine when Merriweather will be ready and make a decision. If they think it's 1-2 games rather than 5-6... then there's no reason to put him on any kind of IR.

From what I heard, he may start the final preseason game. So if he looks ok there, I think they'll take their chances.

IR or PUP he would be forced to sit out for six weeks minimum. Both count as roster exemptions while they are on the designation ( I think), But IR gives the extra two weeks so he could be there for eight weeks before the team HAD to make a determination. ON the PUP list, by week seven he has to be cleared for eval practice, which can be up to an extra six weeks where he still counts as a roster exemption, but can do conditioning and "limited:" team practice.

Belichick explained last year that in order to be eligible for the designated to return IR, you have to be part of the 53-man roster first.

S
o he makes roster on Sept 4th, gets designated Sept 5th. Only fear with that is the guy we release in order ot designate Merriweather as part of the 53 might get picked up off waivers. But if we cut a guy like say Sky Dawson for a day, its a calculated risk.

Best option though is for him to be healthy.

Second best option is to just designate him to the PUP list. Get him back in six weeks without risking releasing another guy we need to kep for that six weeks.

Has he practiced? He would no be eligible for the PUP list if he has.

I don't know much about your situation, just trying to clarify the rules as well as possible.

Thanks for all the info and clarification everyone! The PUP and IR rules were really confusing to me as regards to the 53 roster.

I just hope our secondary doesn't totally suck all season. On a brighter note, it would be hard to be worse in this area, lol.
