If you can guarantee that every single person in the draft looks at Walter Football when they vote to see if the teams addressed their needs then sure we can do that. If I start penalizing people i'll have a bitch of a time finding people to join next year...

Let's just leave it alone...
I agree. If I really owned a team, team need would be handled in FA, the draft is for best talent available, period. If there is a tie between talents, team need breaks the tie. Drafting for need instead of best talent is how you have a draft where none of them are still with the team in 5 years

I think its more nuanced than you suggest but for the most part I fully agree with your sentiment.

I think the hard part is actually evaluating your current roster. The Chiefs last year had to make decisions based around whether or not they wanted to build around Alex Smith, Eric Berry or Dontari Poe. They chose Berry and traded up to draft Mahomes then Alex Smith has a career year. Maybe at this point last year Berry and Mahomes were the top 'talents' to build around but it certainly made for a quick exit during the season.

So I agree that drafting for talent is a must but it has to be within some sort of plan. You should trade up or down to facilitate that plan based around the talent pool of each draft.

You are correct in that trading up is a way to hit your need with best talent available, though it is also the most risky. A couple of years ago, Jerry Jones was trying to trade multiple picks to move back into the first round and take PLynch. The Bronco's got Lynch, and the Cowboys ended up keeping their own picks, and ended up taking Dak Prescott in the 4th round. A few years back, Jerry wanted to go for need in a QB of the future, and lost a heated argument with hjs son Stephen and Wil McClay, and the Cowboys ended up with Zach Martin instead of Johnny Football lol

From what I remember, the Rams wanted to trade back in and get Zack Martin but Fisher/Snead flinched because it would've cost them a ton. I think Martin would've been their pick if Donald wasn't on the board. They also apparently had people blowing up their phones on the Donald pick to so they could've traded down.

I think the rookie contracts on QBs have teams going way out of their way to trade up for QBs.

Yeah that's a good point, late first round gets you an extra year, that's a lot of value on a QB .
The Cowboys tried to trade up for Donald, also for Shazier. Couple of great ones there

Tell you what, we get Cleveland involved in this deal to take all that off your hands and I'll supply the gum

They already got RG3 from my Skins and also drafted Courtney Brown from my Penn St so let’s leave the brownies alone. @Shanemansj13
