I would bet that the majority of writers who cast their ballots that ultimately determine the three finalists just take a cursory look at the main statistical categories. It is still a popularity contest for the most part.

Code:
 					G A P
1. P.K. Subban MTL D 42 11 27 38
2 Kris Letang PIT D 35 5 33 38
3 Ryan Suter MIN D 48 4 28 32

done and done!

So what is the consensus then? If I had a vote, I'd go with Brent Burns just for arguments sake.

2 people voted for Suter's line, vs. 1 for Letang. Suter wins! :)

Hopefully Subban doesn't win because a Montreal writer fails to put Suter's name on his/her ballot.

They need to redefine the Norris Trophy. They shouldn't say it goes to the best defenseman. They should simply say it goes to the best offensive defenseman. Better yet just call it the Marc Andre Bergeron Trophy.

As for the Calder Trophy if your a rookie Defenseman or Goalie you're obviously going to need a miracle to have a chane at ever winning it. If Brodin can't make the top 3 the people deciding who gets the award weren't paying any attention to him whatsoever. It's like he never played a game this season.

I for one am glad to see Suter get nominated. Because a slow start in a shortened season is not a reason to leave someone off a major award ballot.

For the last 40 years the Norris has gone to players who could score. I'm not sure what your point is.

I'd love to see a true defensive defenseman win the award but without scoring he'd have to literally be a wall.

The fact is that the most elusive, and most valuable, skill in the NHL is the ability to contribute offense. That applies to all skating positions.

It's not like any of these players is a notably bad defenseman in his own end. Again, I'm not sure what your point is.

My point is the people who nominate the top three for the Norris only care about offense. They couldn't care less about defense.

Of course he will. He tied for the league lead in points among defenseman & led all defenseman in goals. The best offensive defenseman wins the award again.

For every 60 minutes that Subban played (5-on-5) this year his team had 15 shots on goal more than the opposition. That figure drops to just under 7 for any other regular defenseman on his team. I would say that he tilted the ice pretty well in his favour.

As a comparison, Zdeno Chara's team enjoyed 14 more shots on goal than their opponents for every 60 minutes he played 5-on-5. This was decimal points behind rookie Doug Hamilton on his own team. Chara faced only slightly better competition than Subban.

The fact is that Subban was a hugely positive influence on his team. He was, one could easily argue, the most effective defenseman in the league.

I hate the guy but the argument is there in spades for him to win this award.
