To be fair, their entire roster is built on just needing two top end rotation starters (they don’t have) but getting a couple of 4’s is better than what Jerry has done. He has needed bats for 3 years and acquires the equivalent of mop up relief help. These seem like Dipoto moves. What has happened in St. Louis? Crazy.
First base too, France is a fat anchor that Edgar Martinez couldSo now we have holes in RF, 3rd base, 2nd base, DH and a still unproven commodity in LF. But, hey hey, we are corning the market on utility players and mediocre relievers! We're on a roll, guys! Go buy season tickets!
Yes but I don't expect anything from Jerry. I do from Cards. To be fair, their entire roster is built on just needing two top end rotation starters (they don’t have) but getting a couple of 4’s is better than what Jerry has done. He's too up and down for the money he's looking for. I'd pass and look else where.Three free agents to be wary of
1. Blake Snell, LHP
This is one player whom I did cover in some depth in my rankings. Snell could very well be the next Max Scherzer -- a power-based starting pitcher who ages well when it comes to velocity and strikeouts, en route to a big ROI on what I predicted will be a $150 million deal.
After all, Snell just won the National League Cy Young -- but on the other hand, he did so by outperforming his peripherals by about 1½ runs. He led the league in walks and has thrown 130-plus innings only twice in his career. That sounds an awful lot like Carlos Rodon, the worst free agent deal from last winter, and if that sounds like recency bias, the other two recent stuff-over-command lefty starters given nine-figure deals are Patrick Corbinand Robbie Ray, also disastrous contracts for their clubs.
This subset of highly paid pitchers doing poorly does make some logical sense:
- The rarest thing a contending team can land is a power lefty starter.
- Clubs will be willing to overpay to get them.
- Nine-figure free agent deals often come after career years with post-peak seasons ahead.
- Stuff-over-command pitchers often have nothing to fall back on in their 30s, once their stuff/physical prowess regresses.
That's a good point and he did raise the flag last night. If he signs here I'm fine with it as long as they address the other 3 quarters of the field that's currently vacant.I agree 100%, but he may be the only one actually willing to come here.
I think we 100% need to sign a stud pitcher and trade one or two young arms for those positions of need. We won't sign enough guys to fill out the roster. Well not sign enough quality guys anyways. A third catcher and a 6th utility guy we may do.That's a good point and he did raise the flag last night. If that goes down, and the rumor about the Cubs and Bichette, that kind of leaves the Mariners as the front runner for Ohtani then doesn’t it?The possibility of the Los Angeles Dodgers trading for Milwaukee Brewers' players Corbin Burnes and Willy Adames has generated considerable buzz in the baseball community, with Mark Feinsand linking the two teams in trade talks.

My question is where is Seattle? We could use both these guys.
We ain't the front runner for anyone. Ever! But I like your thought. If that goes down, and the rumor about the Cubs and Bichette, that kind of leaves the Mariners as the front runner for Ohtani then doesn’t it?
Well just theoretically if those happen those are two teams that are in the Ohtani, Bellinger and Martinez sweepstakes. I can always be hopefulWe ain't the front runner for anyone. Ever! But I like your thought.
Also adding Sonny Gary today. Gray, Gibson and Lynn. Three innings eaters. Not bad moves in the current MLB mindset for building a pitching staff, but they are going to need a lockdown bullpen. These seem like Dipoto moves. What has happened in St. Louis? Crazy.
I know I’ve already wrote this, but St Louis was a good trade partner for a guy like Miller or Woo. The longer they go and teams sign number 3’s the less leverage Jerry has and the more and more Gilbert or Kirby are going to be asked for to get a legitimate impact bat. The other teams they are linked to or “line up” with is Cincinnati and Baltimore and both of the rumored trade for both of those are a big fat no from me. Maybe Hancock for India but nothing else, and with Baltimore the rumor is for their two MLB ready prospects which are high risk and high reward but if they struggle like most Mariners rookies have then the season is lost. Also adding Sonny Gary today.
