I definitely think Jerry thought he’d had more payroll. Dude looked dejected at the winter meetings. Before the 54% comment he made it abundantly clear their payroll would be higher and it didn’t seem like he was saying a couple of million more. I think he zero’d in on Garver with the assumption he’d still get more money because the rest of offseason really makes no sense when his first big move was getting a full time DH. Haniger and Polanco for sure need DH days, but so does Julio, Cal and Urias.

Though I do wish Stanton would go on the record. Literally nothing changed from the post season press conference and the winter meetings money wise since they knew about Xfinity thing before the season ended. Only difference was Jerry made the organization the joke of the sport. And just curious if that had something to do with them not opening up the wallet. He doesn’t have an extension yet and it really doesn’t make sense to allow him to make a $200 investment in a player if they aren’t willing to commit to him.
I know what you are saying, but it is just too much disfunction over several years for me to believe he was the Sergeant Schultz of baseball management. I have zero trust in that man.

Milwaukee Brewers star closer Devin Williams has two stress fractures in his back and is expected to miss around three months, sources tell ESPN. Williams pitched through back soreness in September, but it returned earlier this spring. He'll rehab and should return by midseason.

Devin Williams visited back specialist Dr. Robert Watkins today, and he diagnosed pars fractures on both sides of Williams’ T12 vertebra. Williams will be shut down for six weeks and rehab for another six, and Watkins expressed confidence that Williams would make a full recovery.

We have to give Jerry praise because he knew Marte would get busted for PED’s? It is way too early to give a grade on that deal unless the goal was to end the playoff drought. I’d argue if Jerry knew the team would be hamstrung payroll wise he would go back to that deadline and either not make the deal or not signed Castillo to that deal.

Obviously he didn't know but its the same thing if he would have played this season and finished with 200 strikeouts either scenario he was an ineffective player and we are better off with Castillo. As for that deadline deal he could have been thinking whatever cap space we have we should probably use it on pitching and building a awesome rotation as that is the better way to try and win and Marte is the prospect we should trade away to get that player.

I’m not really saying anything about the trade. My only point was if Jerry knew ownership wouldn’t give him money this offseason I doubt he would’ve made that trade/signed an extension. Building a great staff is great. But if they aren’t going to buy free agents then Castillo, Kirby and Gilbert will all have way too many innings on their arms when all of their young prospects are MLB ready.

A. I don’t get what the Padres are doing. They aren’t going to be good this coming season so it’s a head scratcher. They aren’t going to be terrible, but they lost a lot of talent

B. Until I looked into his numbers, didn’t realize just how average of a pitcher Cease has been. Everyone talks about how great he is but really he only had 1 season that is worth a top 10 prospect, let alone 3.

A. - And they traded so much young talent in recent years. You can't just buy free agents every year. I don't like Mariners plan, but the Padres are just as nuts IMO.

B - I read he was #1 in missed contact I believe. I mean that is an okay stat, but other than that he has dipped a lot in recent years and not worth what they gave up. I would have been mad if Mariners gave that up for him.

That’s why I am confused with the Padres. They lost a lot talent, got a IMO crappy return for Soto and now just gave up almost half of their top prospects. They are in danger of entering Angels territory

Cease isn’t terrible at all. All I am saying is he would be at best the number 4 on the Mariners. I think it would be dumb if any team gave up that much for Miller or Woo and their upside plus contract is at a minimum equal to the pitcher Cease is outside of 1 season.

What would have been your plan to remedy all this? You would keep Marte?

All of what? The ownership not spending money? The keeping Marte is what I think Jerry would do in hindsight

If they get Snell, by the AS break the Astros will have a better staff than the Mariners thus no shot at the division.
Funny that he worked out in Seattle and the Mariners were not mentioned as one of the teams that watched him. At least not in the article I read.

He works out at UW all the time. And he built his pitching driveline. Dude is basically begging the Mariners to make him just a non embarrassing offer and he will take it. Give him a 5 year 900 million contract but it is really a 1/20 with a team option and he is home. The Mariners have about $60 million to give out this year and they are still in the black. They don’t know their finances for next year…..but if they are smart, which for some reason brilliant businessmen are smart at business but not sports business, they would offer it and make the money back easily. A Mariners WS appearance would net them more than they made for the all star game that they had to pay to get.

Blake Snell has told the Astros he’s seeking at least a two-year, $66M deal with an opt-out after 2024, per @BNightengaleThe Astros are intrigued, but are “the latest team to balk at his asking price”
