KeyArena, which seats 11,000 for hockey, isn’t an ideal location for the NHL and would likely be a short-term option in Seattle. Hansen has a deal with the city and King County to build a $490 million downtown arena, but construction cannot begin until an NBA team is secured.

Councilman Tim Burgess isn’t sure the project would begin with a hockey team as the primary tenant. He noted it would be a “substantial change” to the city’s agreement to go forward without an NBA team.

“Relying on an NHL team alone would not be a strong enough foundation,” Burgess said.

Don't you just love it when NHL hockey is listed as 'Other Sports' by the Seattle Times?

I really have a hard time believing that the NHL would relocate the Coyotes to Seattle without a high degree of confidence/assurances that Seattle is getting a NBA team. You would have to believe that Bettman and Stern/Silver are having plenty of discussions these days.

Stop me if you have heard this one before:

Parameters of Glendale arena deal reportedly in place

Council to discuss potential deal Tuesday, could come to vote June 25

A source close to the city said the lease would be for 15-years and would not have an escape clause.

Fox Sports Arizona reported Friday that the two sides had bridged a significant $9 million annual gap in the deal

A source close to the negotiations, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they cannot speak on city deals, said council still has worries about the deal, but also said council is fond of the fact that there is no out clause.

...

Absolutely mind-boggling to believe that RSE would agree to this w/o assurances of financial 'assistance' from the NHL.

Everybody get ready to pay more for their Official Team Merchandise if this deal happens.

I think they need to put this to the people of Glendale. They should be able to vote as to whether they want the Coyotes anymore. This has gotten to be ridiculous. The City Council has wasted a lot of money on this hockey team.

Just saying stupid stuff because I am bored at work.
If a deal is not met with phx or Seattle and the NHL rejects QC for now:
Could they move the team to Vegas or Houston as an interm home? Both places are rumored to have been in on the bidding for Atlanta. Both have arenas big enough and ready to go 16-18K
Both are in the West (ish)
Not really thinking this will happen
Just laughing at this phx mess

Houston could be a viable choice with the support for the Aeros. And there is a lot of money in Houston.

Kansas City also had an NHL ready arena and local support just a few years ago. I am also still thinking that Milwaukee could work.

But no on Vegas. No. Just no. We already have enough WTF officiating, the last thing we need to is to invite the spector of fixing games. Just.... no.

Sounds more like a total dick with too much attitude and time on his hands. Keeps saying the arena is making money without a team.

Well, duh. It would make more WITH a team, dumbass. Stop with the txt spk 2, k?

Not if they had to pay out an arena management fee like glendale does

And we can take shots at him all day but the fact is no one locally there has stepped up and said yhey want to own a team in that market

You can throw random city names out there all you want but only one current non nhl city has a group publically saying they want to own and operate a team

Would someone really be stupid enough to sign a deal like Glendale? After that mess?

I get the desire for local ownership, but if that's a hard and fast requirement, then only Toronto and Quebec are possible. And going in those places would make someone money, but would not grow the league at all. A second GTA team is not going to introduce the game to anyone.

Moving to an 11,000 seat arena hoping a bigger one gets built is stupid too. The need to find an already built arena that is suitable, an area without a lot of competition for expendable dollars and preferably in a place where hockey can grow.

Seems to me that no one wants to buy the Coyotes and keep them there because even with the league throwing wheelbarrows of money into it, it's still a losing venture.

And with them fumbling realignment so badly, another team in the eastern time zone creates it's own issues. The list of viable places is pretty short.

I was thinking Vegas as a true temp location. Close enough to Phx to televise but keeps all the other sites in the mix.

Seattle doesn't really have a place for the team next year and they want Quebec to pay for an expansion team

I have a hard time believing that will work. If you take my team but then offer to show me their games in a new city its like stealing my girlfriend but letting me watch while you rail her. There is no way I would support a relocated team, I would be surprised if Phoenix did.

Raider fans in LA say hello.
Phoenix fans might if the league keeps Phoenix in the mix
"We couldn't get the lease in Glendale, but we want to keep working on keeping your team in the area. We are moving the team for now to Vegas while continuing to try to work out a deal to find a home for you Coyotes"

Suckers
Mean time the Yotes are sold to the highest bidder while giving time to get an arena funded.

You can't really be comparing the popularity of football to hockey in America. I love the sport of hockey but let's be honest, it can't hold footballs jock in terms of American interest in any market let alone a non traditional hockey market.

Although I have been told I hold grudges and can be a bitter loser, it is definitely possible that other fans are better people than I. And the 'we are trying to keep them in the area' spiel could work well enough to get the league to give it a go.

Plus the NHL has shown it is not adverse to shitty relocation ideas

Speaking of Las Vegas:

Casino giant MGM Resorts International and entertainment company AEG say they've inked a deal to build a 20,000-seat Las Vegas Strip arena.

Officials with Las Vegas-based MGM Resorts and Los Angeles-based AEG say the joint venture will provide a centerpiece for a renovation of the area from Las Vegas Boulevard to Frank Sinatra Drive between the New York-New York and Monte Carlo resorts.
