Safety value was actually pretty tough to pin down in this one even though it was a rare deep draft with a lot of talent. Vaccarro might be real good but doesn't fit the scheme and was gone early. That could have saved us the 3rd if he lasted until Cin, but maybe not because Reid would be coming off very shortly after anyway. Cyprien is a wildcard, and I'd hate to be stuck with Elam and Whitner. So I see why we really wanted Reid. Also the actual trade value we got was very good (actually saved us a 5th from what Chi wanted one pick later).

Just say this worked out where we move up a few spots for Hopkins or Patterson. Then we'd be backtracking to get high value at both S and DE. We'd get a safety (but not Reid). Then we probably miss out on Carradine, unless we coughed up the low second and third anyway to get him. So what happens is we end up not getting our TE who has the best chance out of all the offensive players to get on the field this year, or we miss out on our DE this year which we really needed to come away with.

yep, this would be drafting like we do in fantasy football? you look at the needs and then figure how to get the best balance....in one draft. but the real NFL draft is over time, over 'careers', not one season.

in the real draft you identify the BPA's and draft them, go get them if necessary? apparently, our FO identified Reid as this guy.

Baalke and to an extent McCloughan (previously) have some what broken the draft mold. They have approached the first 2 rounds as almost an extension of free agency. And maybe that isn't such a bad thing? Maybe finding the player that fits the team best now is the way to go? Apparantly "drafting for need" isn't that bad if you are aggressive and go get the guys that fit your system in the best possible way. At least it has worked out for Baalke and company so far...

Of course, the upcoming season will be more of a determening factor in this stradegy. We will see how Jenkins and Reid make Baalke's draft approach look going forward...

No but, they know Crabs prior to last season had been labeled as an being an "injury prone" player. They know Boldin is not a long term answer, they know if Crabs were to stay with Kaep a year longer, he woul have produced gaudy numbers (please see his last 6-8 games of the season with Kaep) - which in fact would have made signing or extending him an extremely difficul / borderline impossible task. Thus we needed to make plans for his departure if it came to that...

It's not a matter of forecasting an injury it's stategically forecasting and planning for what we are used to. A healthy 16 game season Crabtree is an anomaly. Are we really suprised that he got hurt?

If only they had used a first round pick in 2012 on the WR position....

one thing is for certain, the door is WIDE open for both to step thru.

The strength of this draft lined up strongly with our needs. Reid needs to strongly outperform the other S options to justify the move. All I'm saying is I wasn't strongly in favor of adding a WR for value over the strong DE value that was there unless the safeties also fell. It didn't play out that way - we would have had to take Cyprien w/ our 2nd Rd pick or see a huge talent drop-off. So all in all I'm still happy we landed a S and DE w/ the first two picks.

At WR we already added Boldin to upgrade Moss, we burned a 1st last year that is still in play, and we have Manningham and Williams coming back. Now compare that to DE that had nothing behind J. Smith after losing RJF. Dobbs didn't pan out as a true option.

If we lost J. Smith instead of Crabtree and didn't draft a DE until later we'd be in much worse shape compared to having Crabtree go down.

They have spent a 1st and 4th on WR's the last two drafts...

The WR spot has not been neglected...

And upgraded Moss w/ Boldin, and picked up Manningham as a #3...

DE was pretty much neglected until we got Carradine. We got Dorsey, but he'll probably be a plug for NT.

yes, no doubt. Reid will have to show up and justify he's better than the other safeties (Cyprien and Elam).

speaking of Dobbs, he looked good two pre-seasons ago? but there must be reason(s) they didn't push him at RDE? maybe he can rush well, but not defend the run well? anyways, guess we've moved to to Carradine.

Reid's got to be even better than that. He's got to be better than Cyprien/Elan + the 3rd Rounder

Dobbs always looked great in preseason, but when we really needed someone to step up for J. Smith, it was RJF in that spot over him. I think Dobbs missed his window, and the DUI didn't help. Odds could be really stacked against him making the roster with Carradine and the other d-line pick.

ok, 'plus the 3rd rounder' however you gage that amount? cause there is no way to measure how much better....unless its lopsided? anything in that wide band of gray, and each of us will rely on our opinions. :-)

agree with Dobbs and his best 'window' at RDE. he won't necessarily be cut, but RDE is now Carradine's to lose. i hesitate to say Dobbs WILL be cut, due to Tank's injury?

Cordarrelle Patterson drawing raves in spring

ESPN's Kevin Seifert says a half-dozen people have told him recently how impressive rookie Cordarrelle Patterson has been this offseason.

Patterson was a lock to excel in non-padded drills in which defenders aren't allowed to touch him. He's a physical freak that can run by anyone. The key to beating out Jerome Simpson for the starting split end job will be getting off jams at the line of scrimmage and running crisp routes in traffic. Patterson won't have a chance to show he's polished enough to do that until camp.

Dobbs was injured. He went on IR after the Dolphins game. Tukuafu was also battling an injury.

No doubt we needed a receiver very badly. Mario (soon to be gone), Boldin (rental), Jenkins (untrustworthy as future #1), Patton (wasn't even on the team), Lockette (unknown), Crabtree (last year of deal); we absolutely NEEDED a receiver. Patterson would have been ideal.

That being said, we drafted Reid and as much as it might suck and hurt for people who wanted someone else (like myself) we have to move on and let it go. We gotta hope the Reid will turn into Ronnie Lott, that Crabtree will sign longterm for a reasonable contract, that Jenkins lives up to his draft status, that Lockette and Patton show that they can be great #3 and #4 guys. We have what we have, now lets hope for the best. Go 9ers!
