bb I was just thinking, No offense but "neither" to me is a dumb option. IMO the third choice should be "Both" how can "neither" side be at fault for a lockout or strike? Maybe I'm missing something.

well the question is whose side are you on, not who is to blame.. if it were the latter 'both' would make sense

From my perspective, Boss, both sides are responsible for where we are at today - I do think that the league are more at fault than the players for the latest lockout and where we currently are today, but the players can't think that essentially maintaining the status quo is going to get a deal done either.

Thus, I voted neither as well.

i used to be partial to the players.. the owners drew up exactly what they wanted and then decided 7 years later they dont like it anymore, on top of all the 6 yr big $$ contracts right before they locked out because they dont want 6 yr big $$ contracts to be legal anymore.. fuck the owners

but fuck the players too, because i want to watch hockey. i dont care if you make 2 mil instead of 8 mil. i really dont. play hockey, be rich. dont cry to me about being poor.

Good point, It's all about the wording.

I agree dash both sides are messed up. Remember I predicted this would happen four years ago. I wish I was wrong though.

I made it 41%.

Both sides are greedy fucks.

I'm on the both/neither bandwagon. I think if 1 side was clearly right and the other was clearly wrong we wouldn't be having this problem all the time. And I also think that some owners are more to blame than others and basically just the whole economic system is a mess. I'm usually a big fan of capitalism and just letting the markets determine everything but the problem is some teams can afford much more than others.

as mentioned in the other thread:

- players are willing to fulfill the contracts that they had previously signed. That is fair
- owners want to roll back contracts they had previously signed (as recently as two days ago). that is not fair.
- this is a lock-out, not a hold-out

I'm with the players on this one.

Players for me. I think that the last restructuring was necessary but this one is just about the owners arrogance.

Yeah definitely with the players on that issue. Any current contracts should be grandfathered for sure.

This is a big problem. Some owners and GM's find ways to circumvent the CBA with bullshit contracts and the players and agents sign these bullshit contract's. There is enough blame to go around to both sides.

I'm also with the players, assuming the hangup is on honoring the contracts. The contracts were signed, they should be honored.

To be honest, I think the whole problem is just as much about owners vs owners (and maybe to a lesser extent players vs players) as it is owners vs players.

If the league would agree to this, I think we would be well on the way towards a new CBA. It's like I said previously, it's almost as if Bettman promised the owners an immediate cash infusion by rolling back player salaries and he's not budging from that position.

I remeber getting into a debate with Boss a couple of years back regarding this - I stated the current cba back then was failsafe as HRR dictated the salary cap and excrow prevented either side from getting too big a piece of the pie. You were right Boss, and correctly used the small market argument back then.

Well, as we now know, smaller market teams were getting priced out with with huge multi year signings even as the pie was getting larger and larger. Well, apparently, both sides want bigger pieces of the pie.

I look at this purely from a business standpoint - I side with the owners - The old CBA ended and they want a new deal that is more favorable for them which is understandable. The players also want that, or to keep the status quo. The problem I have with the PA is their point they already had salary rollbacks after the past lockout - well without those, there wouldn't be an NHL today as the league was on the brink of financial disaster back then. Both sides got what they were looking for - salaries tied to HRR.

I also loathe Donald Fehr and his insistance salary rollbacks are a deal breaker - you cannot use the past lockout as your number one point in negoitiating a new CBA - the entire economic landscape has changed. Use the past lockouts from the NFL and NBA as an example - the revenue split is always going to slightly favor the league - deal with it and find common ground on max salaries, escrow, salary cap, free agency, contract length, etc. Take the salary haircut, accept 50/50 revenue and move on. Billionaires always trump millionaires.

My biggest problem is Bettman said they would wait & see what the other leagues did with their CBA's before they would talk to the players. Hey Bettman everyone else got a deal done while you watched & did nothing. I don't like the rollbacks either.

FUCK THE OWNERS!!

Too bad it doesn't have a somewhere in between value like "Both, but players moreso" or vice versa.

I consider the owners more at fault, but I don't let the players off with a free pass either. But I see either of those as too much of an absolute to go with anything but neither.

(Yep, I'm way overthinking this. I need hockey back to take my mind off this crap.)
