Hits to the head again will be part of the discussion when the NHL's 30 general managers meet Tuesday in Toronto.

A look at some items on the agenda, provided to ESPN.com by a source on Friday:

" "Review of Head Hits." The discussion will include video examples of the new head shot rule affecting on-ice conduct (players avoiding illegal contact). But the discussion also will "explain GMs groups' directives from last March" when Rule 48 was originally voted on. Also on the agenda is a report from the Mayo Clinic Conference on Concussions in Hockey.

" "Review of Overtime/Shootout Stats." The issue was tabled by Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland, who's suggesting a new overtime format that would include eight minutes instead of the current five, with half played at four-on-four and the other four minutes played at three-on-three.

The goal of the proposed new format would be to limit the number of shootouts. However, after last season saw a record number of shootouts, this season the number of shootouts are down, so that will be a big part of the discussion. Maybe change is not needed after all.

" "Request for Supplementary Discipline." The sub-heads under this topic include "Lobbying," "Retaliatory Requests" and "Repeat Offenders." Basically, the process involved in league discipline has always been a touchy subject and will be clarified again.

" "Union/CBA Issues." Self-explanatory, as the current collective bargaining agreement only has one more season left on it after this season.

" "Hockey Operations Report." The league's Toronto staff routinely updates GMs on issues and/or trends they see.

" "Warm-ups/Instigating and Trash Talking." A discussion here about trying to put an end to pregame verbal controntations, etc., that sometimes occur in warmup.

" "Discussion of R & D Camp." The group will discuss the merits of the research and development camp held last August.

" "All-Star Game: Carolina 2011." A discussion on the format change for the All-Star Game.

" "Coaches' Request for Video Review/Coaches' Challenge." This was tabled by Florida Panthers GM Dale Tallon in the wake of a controversial goal by Toronto's Colton Orr that cost his team a game two weeks ago. The idea would be to allow a team to challenge a goal/non-goal.

" "NHL Scouting Combine." A discussion of whether the annual event, held at a Toronto airport hotel, should play out in an arena, as is the case with the NFL.

Pierre LeBrun covers the NHL for ESPN.com.

Overtime Format

I'm totally in favor of a new OT format. 8 minute OT, 4 minutes of 4 on 4 and the last 4 minutes 3 on 3? Now who would not find that exciting? The one thing they need to get straight is the point system. I think they should go back to the old format and not this 3 point crap. If they continue with the shootout, how about zero points for a loss in OT, and if they go to the shootout, 2 points for the winner and 1 for the loser. I dunno...

Pregame shit talking

Now the thing I don't like about this meeting is the possibility of eliminating the "trash talking, instigating" during warm ups . To me, that's just as bad as eliminating fighting in the NHL. It sounds like they are slowly softening up the game, how fucking boring that would be.
Its one of the reasons I love hockey, its one of the last pure competitive sports left that true rivalries are derived. Not this commercialized crap of the NBA and NFL. I wish the fans could vote on this type of shit. Of course no fighting during warm ups, save it for the game. Pre-game penalty for physical confrontations prior to the game, but damnit let them talk shit to each other, makes for a more exciting game, series, creates the rivalries that Hockey is known for.

Coaches Challenge

I have mixed feelings on this, I like it, but how are they going to limit this? What if they lose the challenge, what would be the penalty for it? How many challenges per game, per period? Its going to be interesting to see how they propose this idea.

I've already got my tickets punched for that weekend...
What kind of format are they talking about?
Can it be rubber sticks, no goalie and a beachball? That would be sweet.

no thanks
shootouts are bad enough as a way to determine an extra point, 3-3 is no better. Yes, at least that is being played "competitively" instead of a 1:1 skills competition... but 3-3 is too much of a bastardization in it's own right, having nothing really to do with how the game should actually be played... and mo better than a shootout in that respect. Of course, I'll stamp that with a "IMO"
I'm completely for extending the OT and think that NEEDS to happen, to give the teams a chance to settle it on the ice (much better than shootout)... but not going to 3-3, I hate that idea.

As for the points?
Again.. as I'm sure a VAST majority of posters on here will agree to...
I DON'T CARE HOW YOU DO IT ANYMORE NHL... JUST MAKE THE GAMES ALL WORTH THE SAME # OF FREAKING POINTS!!
One game worth 2 and another worth 3 is just fucking stupid.
points for losing, no points for losing, half a point for going to OT, 1/5 of a point of picking your nose, .75 of a point for being well mannered and saying please and thank you... I DON"T CARE... as long as they all work out the same and equally for all teams and all games in the end.

There should just be 2 points to the winner... 0 points to the loser regardless of regulation, OT, or shootout. I personally like the shootout and hope they dont do away with it ever... I also like the idea of the 8 minute OT period.

How, exactly, do you police/punish "pre-game shit talking" anyway?
We have enough grey areas in the rulebook that are open to interpretation... now they think they can wrap their heads around that?

What are the parameters and how, exactly, do you set them?
You think Colin Campbell is arbitrary on what constitutes a fine or suspension under the CURRENT rules for things that happen DURING gameplay... this just is a disaster waiting to happen. Guys like Avery and LaRose may as well just sign over their paychecks now...

But the discussion also will "explain GMs groups' directives from last March" when Rule 48 was originally voted on. An issue that the fans, the NHLPA, the players, the GMs, and the league will probably never see eye-to-eye on. While I'm all for shots to the head being taken out of the game, the Thornton suspension just goes to show that you need to be able to use some judgement.

" "Review of Overtime/Shootout Stats." The issue was tabled by Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland, who's suggesting a new overtime format that would include eight minutes instead of the current five, with half played at four-on-four and the other four minutes played at three-on-three.

I don't mind the 8 minutes, I don't like the three-on-three. Just seems gimmicky to me.

" "Request for Supplementary Discipline." The sub-heads under this topic include "Lobbying," "Retaliatory Requests" and "Repeat Offenders." Basically, the process involved in league discipline has always been a touchy subject and will be clarified again.

Not sure exactly what they are talking about with everything here. Obviously there is a lack of consistency across the board, especially when it comes to repeat offenders. Are "retaliatory requests" instances where a coach or someone asks a player to go out headhunting? Because it's pretty rare that such a thing can be proven, although I'm sure it happens all the time. I don't know what they are talking about with lobbying, I'm guessing they are sick of coaches and players nagging refs about bad calls, trying to get makeup calls. Sorry, Randy. You'll have to find something new to whine about.

" "Union/CBA Issues." Self-explanatory, as the current collective bargaining agreement only has one more season left on it after this season.

Get it done, you punks.

" "Hockey Operations Report." The league's Toronto staff routinely updates GMs on issues and/or trends they see.

After the Orr goal, I'm guessing they spend most of their time watching Friends reruns than the actual games. Any word on Joey's new girlfriend?

" "Warm-ups/Instigating and Trash Talking." A discussion here about trying to put an end to pregame verbal controntations, etc., that sometimes occur in warmup.

There's a fine line between bush league antics and good old fashioned trash talking. It's hard to have one without the other. I'd say leave the trash talking alone, but make it a mandatory 10 game suspension for any sort of physical altercation.

" "Discussion of R & D Camp." The group will discuss the merits of the research and development camp held last August.

Hopefully Shanahan sends Bettman and Co. back to the playroom while he talks with the grown ups for this one.

" "All-Star Game: Carolina 2011." A discussion on the format change for the All-Star Game.

Players are complaining of a dangerous reflective glare coming off the bleachers near turn three, and there is some loose asphalt in the straightaway, but other than that there are no major issues outside of engine tampering and fuel quality.

They could really fuck this one up, or it could be a very good thing. It really needs it's own thread, I think.

" "NHL Scouting Combine." A discussion of whether the annual event, held at a Toronto airport hotel, should play out in an arena, as is the case with the NFL.

Don't care.

I also am definitely not for that overtime format. How would they change at four minutes? If play is still going, are they just going to whistle it dead and make someone from each team get off? If they do, that can be aggravating to watch; if they wait until the next week, that is also annoying because it could vary greatly from one game to the next. Also, 3 on 3 is almost as bad as the shootout, as Bizzle Mc-fucking-Dizzle said.

As for the shootout, it can be entertaining to watch once in a while, but often it is annoying, and I hate that it determines a winner. I'm fine with one ten minute overtime, 4 on 4, and if no one scores, it ends in a tie; however, I'm not very adamant about it; I just, like others said, think all games need to be worth the same number of points.

I'll make my other points short.

Pre-game trashing talking: Don't like it? Clean the sand out of your vagina.

Coach's Challenge: Goals already get video reviewed at times, and they still screw them up at times.

Only as long as the coaches have to throw a red flag on the ice.
