Their bags are already packed for sunny Florida, and some of the guys are already down there. Other than either Tatar or Nyquist, if a call did come from the league, I think that any of them would be able to get a note from one of the clinics down there claiming that they have got some kind of ailment. "Sorry, Commish, I'd love to go, and thanks for the opportunity, but I just banged up my toe and can't even get my shoe on; my skates are even tighter!" But, you and I both know that the real untold message is more along the lines of: "You've got to be kidding, right? You want me to leave this 77 degree week, sunny and perfect, to go up to a 23 degree place to play in a show, when many of the players will put on an exhibition, some of them to clown around on the ice for attention, where I can get in every 5th shift for around 50 seconds, in a game that no longer means shit to anyone except you and the people who will see their first and last hockey game of the season - they're annual spectacle experience on TV. I think that you better check again and call the next guy on your list."

I think the rule - maybe that's "rule" since I don't know that it's in writing anywhere, just the NHL making it up as they go again - is that they can only be excused from the ASG for an injury if it caused them to miss real game time.

On the other hand, if you vote Wings players into the All-Star game and they decline the invitation, they're going to be suspended.

Nicklas Lidstrom, Pavel Datsyuk must sit out Detroit Red Wings' next game - ESPN

:D

Sidney Crosby of Pittsburgh Penguins to miss All-Star Game with injury - 2015 NHL All-Star Weekend

So will Crosby this year.

As a result of missing the All-Star Game, Crosby will not be permitted to play in Pittsburgh's home game on Jan. 27 against the Winnipeg Jets.

Biggest crock of crap possible. Look, I know this is fun and all, and I'd enjoy it if it were in town, but the concept of forcing a player to miss a game THAT ACTUALLY MEANS SOMETHING is asinine.

I agree with this totally

I get that the league wants the players to be in if all possible, but forcing them to miss an actual NHL game just because they are not able to play in the ASG is Exhibit A in the joke department

That being said, regardless of who's in and out, I will still watch the ASG - still so many great players to showcase

Same here, I'll watch, especially the skills competition. As a Pens fan, I want the guy healthy, and if he's banged up (which he has to be to be willing to miss a game), it's far better for him to rest. We're talking about a league that gave Ryan Suter two games for a chicken wing to Downie's chops, 2 games to Marchand for slew footing Brassard, two games to Scandella for thrusting his shoulder into Nelson's head, and merely fines guys who throw elbows (Lee, Scandella, Vatanen this year) and throw sucker punches in scrums (Roussel). But yeah...let's essentially suspend a guy for a game because he decided getting healthy was more important than being used as a face to sell the league more. Not like Sid EVER does that, right?

With the way Big Buff has been playing this year, its probably best for Sid and Geno to sit that one out for health reasons. He's been destroying anybody in his path.

The NHL even tried to pass this off as a Nationwide Arena Policy. Since the day it opened, no one under 3 has had to have a ticket to see a game.

Suck really bad for people who are already on their way with the idea that they could bring their kid. NHL really dropped the ball on this.

As if there was any question that the NHL is ruled by marketing and not competition.

I had already seen two articles on the fact that it would be Crosby's second All Star Game (I think). NHL can't let him get away with wasting marketing fluff.

I wonder if Bobrovsky will be subject to the same one game suspension?

Trust not whining I think the whole thing is stupid.

Considering he's possibly done for the year... yeah. He will sit out one game.

He's like, actually hurt.

Are you serious? ESPN didn't mention he practically had to be carried off the ice last night?

Christ on a cracker. I will break my boycott to look.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky will miss this weekend's NHL All-Star Game -- on home ice -- due to a lower-body injury he suffered Wednesday night in Winnipeg.

He will be replaced by St. Louis goalie Brian Elliott.

The Blue Jackets did not reveal a timetable for Bobrovsky's return.

Bobrovsky, selected to participate in his first All-Star Game, has a 16-15-2 record with a 2.85 goals-against average, .913 save percentage and one shutout in 33 games this season. He landed awkwardly while making a stop in the second period of the game won 4-0 by the Jets.

The 2013 Vezina Trophy winner as the NHL's top goalie, he underwent tests on Thursday afternoon.

Holy fuck. :L

I think all ASG's are ridiculous and unwatchable, and rules like this simply reinforce that notion. Pittsburgh has to play the Winnipeg Jets without their two best players because they weren't up to risking their injured bodies for a dumb exhibition game. That's fucking ridiculous.

It's going to take one of these players to get on the phone and throw a law suit against the league about cutting into their livelihood with this bullshit, when they have documentation that playing in that silly game will cause them further injury. Why isn't the player's union stepping in on this issue to speak up for their own players?

Just think with ESPN if this was Lebron and he had a hang nail we would know which finger, the minute of the day he got it, when it was removed and who took care of it for him.

Headlines: "The All-Star List Is Dwindling"
The Commisioner's Office is reeling; there's panic in the NHL headquarters. Players are dropping like flies, and it seems that all the possible replacements have all terminated any phone contact. Call out the militia to replenish the troops.
