As this was deadspin I wasn't sure this was serious. I think its a pretty decent analysis though. Quick read as well.

On a side note. Remember when the internet was gonna be the end of commercials. Yeah, I don't either.

There's very little actual defense being played in today's NFL. "Too close" is now penalized, thanks in large part to that whining assed Peyton Manning.
Somewhere along the line the NFL determined that their waning popularity was directly related to low scores, lack of offensive production and defensive adjustments to newly instituted offensive schemes.
Rules were changed and offensive records shattered, but even then, poor offensive play persisted.
Now we have defensive ranking based largely upon offensive ineptitude. So what's next? Probably more rule changes or incorporating already bad defensive habits into the rule books. I can see it now... Burgundy Jersey within 5 yards of the receiver, 15 yard penalty, automatic first down!

@Stymietee I shit you not. About, oh 12, maybe 15 years ago. I read Tex Schramm I believe t was, and what he saw as the NFL's future.

Games would be played in a studio with no fans in attendance and could only be seen by fans via pay per view. That ain't even the craziest shit though. Not sure if this was Schramm or someone else that said this. But rule changes would continue to the point where before you would be able to hit, tackle or even touch a player catching a pass. You would have to allow them to take 2 steps first.

Lack of defense is terrible in college. The Pac 12 n the Big 12 are really bad imo.

I actually saw that offering from Schramm and looking at the results of these changes along with those that he envisioned, the most valuable player IMHO this year is Derrick Henry.
