NFL may consider negating touchdowns for taunting penalties | ProFootballTalk

Poll forthcoming.

When Seahawks receiver Golden Tate began waving at Rams safety Rodney McLeod at the 25-yard line on Tate’s way to an 80-yard touchdown, the official threw the flag before Tate had even crossed the goal line. But even though Tate committed a penalty before he scored, the touchdown still counted.

Next season, a player who does the same thing may negate his own touchdown.

NFL head of officiating Dean Blandino said on NFL Network that he thinks the Competition Committee will explore changing the NFL’s taunting rules to make them more similar to the taunting rules in the NCAA. In college football, if a player commits a taunting penalty on a touchdown, the touchdown is called back and the 15-yard penalty is enforced from the spot where the taunting began.

Fuck you. Just get rid of taunting and unsportsmanlike conduct and only call real penalties.

maybe, instead of changing the rules, we should just get grown men to play the games

All the celebrations are stupid and can be considered taunting. Laugh in someone's face? Flag. Turn around and do a 30 second dance? Cool.

What Tate did was ridiculous and deserved to be called taunting and if I was his coach I probably would have sat him out at least one series so he knows he just looks like an idiot and makes the team look like an idiot doing crap like that. Some of the calls on the group celebrations after touchdowns though are just ridiculous. Let the guys have some fun as usually it is not geared towards insulting the other team but just having some fun.

No Fun League.

Although taunting should be reserved for better performances than what Seattle's offense showed

I have no problem with it and it would damn sure put and end to the stupid shit Tate did last week and Logan from the Pats the week before. There is no need for that shit in PROFESSIONAL sports, nothing professional about it. At the same time I think they need to loosen up on the fun TD dances etc the ones that don't taunt at all but are just fun. And before anyone asks well how do you differentiate don't ask you know.

It should all be flagged.

Sack dances hurt the feelings of the QB and his protection.

So not cool.

The Panthers - Rams game had some taunting between Steve Smith and Janoris Jenkins, and things ratcheted up from there, into eventual brawling. But if the league is really concerned about this, they should target the players, maybe with half-game suspensions like the NCAA has for targeting. I would find even this action extreme, but not so much as revoking a TD, which would invite a shitstorm.

Okay but answer this question honestly. If teams or players knew that taunting would revoke the TD don't you think they would stop taunting? Simple Yes or No.

I think that eventually some self-centered dumbass would do it in a critical game. I also think that some taunting and trash talking are part of the culture of football.

Participation trophies for everyone. It hurts the feelings of hundreds of grown men when only 1 team gets to win with the current format.

I say we play 16 games then everyone gets a pizza party!

Didn't really answer the question and I understand the hesitance. IMO it would because no player wants to be the guy responsible for giving up 7 points because he was to immature to control his personal actions. The rule would damn sure be harsh but IMO it would have the affect intended.
