Sean Payton: NFL having part-time refs is “madness”

Bingo! And we wonder why we have so many issues in this league with refs.. How about we lower Goodell's @#$^@ing salary and pay these refs so they can quit there day jobs and focus on football ... How does the BIG $ making NFL justify this crap....

I thought they wanted them full time, but the NFL didn't pay as much as these guys were making at their other jobs. Some of these Refs have pretty decent gigs as full time jobs. I believe it came down to money and benefits. They wanted so much and the NFL refused.

With the money the NFL refs get paid they do not need to work any other jobs. They just must choose to do so because they only work 25 or so days year counting preseason and playoffs

I would quit my day job for $200,000 a year to work 25 days

How Much Do NFL Refs Get Paid for the Regular Season? And the Super Bowl?

The average NFL referee salary was $173,000 in 2013, and it is set to rise to $201,000 by 2019. Note that the NFL season only lasts about half the year, and for most NFL referees, refereeing is not their only job.

Coach Payton who's in the league doesn't seem to think so ... NFL might be pulling the wool over our eyes with this one... He didn't mention numbers, but I would be interested to hear what he say's about that...

They need younger refs, who are good athletes.

Ed Hockuli can't afford to quit his day job. Being the Incredible Hulk is far too important

Cut from Google

"The average NFL referee salary was $173,000 in 2013, and it is set to rise to $201,000 by 2019. Note that the NFL season only lasts about half the year, and for most NFL referees, refereeing is not their only job."

It is madness...but if Ed Hochuli is the norm rather than the exception...they most likely would be taking a paycut to be a FT official in the NFL.

I've always heard a lot of these guys are attorneys, or have otherwise high paying cush jobs that allow them to moonlight as NFL officials.

The big issue I see it what do they do for the other 6 mos?...you could probably do film study, training, etc. but that won't last 5-6 mos.

I don't think the refs are the problem. The problem is constant additions to the rule book, and rotating points of emphasis.

Well if they aren't full time, they for sure are 100% half-assed.....

Dez caught that fucking ball...

For the record I like Jerome Booger. And the new guy that looks like a narc, or a physics teacher..

Definitely a part of it ...

The issue to me isn't watching more film, or learning more from the rule book. Other refs don't get any more time in on that. They just call a SHIT-TON more games. NFL refs call 17 games a year. An NBA or NHL ref team calls 80 and an MLB officiating team calls over 150.

The issue to me isn't watching more film, or learning more from the rule book. They are better than ever (even if dozens more HD camera's in slow motion show you a million more missed calls). The issue is you can't have NFL players playing 40 games a year to give them the in game experience of an NBA or MLB official. It's the same as players. You can let them walk through game plans and view game tape for hours and hours but until they are on the field gaining experience there, you are only going to get so much growth.

Take Ed Hochuli, been doing it for over 25 years. Called about 400 games. And Mike Winters (MLB ump) has about 3000 more games called than him in that same time. I don't think staring at game film 40 hours a week for 7 months out of the year is going to make any real improvement.

@SonnyCID is right. These guys are highly compensated and making them full time does not necessarily make them better. If you compare to other sports with full time refs you have to take into account how many games are in a season with Baseball, hockey and basketball. Why pay them full time to ref 1 or occasionally 2 games a week? There have been too many rules added to the game to ramp up scoring, protect QBs and to make sure everyone is a good sport so that no one gets their feelings hurt. For the most part these calls are subjective and subject to ridicule when they go against your team.
Fans have complained about refs since they started being part of the game. If you want less flags, simplify the rules

This is why they can't do their job properly. I'm here watching CBB only to see Gene Steratore is the ref for this basketball game.....and yes he's working on Sunday for the Dolphins vs Rams
