And all the common, emotional fans rejoice. So tired of hearing about this issue. Although, I'm sure the discussion of who "NEEDS" to be next will come up now.
DeBartolo found out he will be honored with a bronze statue at the 49ers stadium in Santa Clara, which is scheduled to open for the 2014 season.
"I just got an email from Keena (Turner, the 49ers' vice president of football affairs)," DeBartolo told CSNBayArea.com. "It's a phenomenal honor.
"I haven't talked to Jed (York). We've emailed each other. They want a picture of me. They want to do a bronze statue at the stadium, along with one of my dad (Edward DeBartolo Sr.). And I said, 'I hope that doesn't mean that they think I'm going to be gone.'"
I wonder how much of Candlestick they will sell. I don't know how difficult it would be, but it'd be cool if those who were regular season ticket holders at candlestick for a certain period of time (even as little as one year) that renewed for the new stadium would get a piece for free and then the rest on sale. If you got two tickets, you'd get two pieces. Shipping and handling, though, I don't know what you'd do, it's a lot of money. Also, would it be team initiated or do you come and prove it if you want it?
Gonna be weird seeing the Stick demolished like that - it's become a common fixture for all those familiar with that Highway 101 drive around biotech row. Not only was the stick a grounds for where the 49ers created their dynasty, but it was also the home of some legendary SF Giants baseball players who were some of the greatest the sport has even seen.
However, anyone who's been there knows that it's dilapidated and the plans to build a retail/corporate facility there is something that part of the city needs to inject revenue.
Do you guys think the first game in the new stadium be against Kansas City? Here says we are scheduled to play them that first year. Winning the SB would lead to a home game to start, plus we'll lobby for it anyway, right? I mean, NFL teams reward teams with new stadiums, right?
