I've been following Henery since he left Nebraska. agree with Iggloo he hasn't been great outside of 40, but inside has been pretty good. Last I heard, he really had a hard time adjusting to the pro ball, it was quite a bit different than what he was use to in college where he hit 90% of his FGs.

The Lions are probably still better off with Rob Bironas.

one other thing, since i was over there any way, looking at his splits this might be a good fit being in Detroit: on turf he was 9/9 last year with 3 in the 40-49 range and 1 50+. in 2012 he was 4/5 with that miss being in the 20-29 range (this miss was @NYG in Dec) and in 2011 he was 6/7 with the miss being from 50+.

I keep hearing about him struggling outside of 40, and not just on here. But I don't see the missed attempts looking at the stats and I dont really watch Philly games. In his 3 years he's hit 31 from 40+ and missed a total of 12 FG's. 86% career. It's hard to really dig up much on kickers.

I did find this:

In his second year with the Eagles, he set a franchise record by making 18 consecutive field goals,[1] and went on to extend the record to 22 (then-longest active streak in the league), before just missing a 58 yard field goal in Week 14 against Tampa Bay.

He might be OK in a dome, but you are not going to want this guy kicking for you in Lambeau or Soldier Field in December.

Henery is one of the most mechanically flawless kickers around. He is very precise, very professional, seems like a good guy. Unfortunately, he lacks an NFL leg. He struggled with kickoffs and was pretty inaccurate past 40 yards on FGs, mainly because I think he was having to strain to kick it that far and it messed up his normally great mechanics.

He was the most accurate kicker ever at Nebraska but he's not an ideal NFL kicker.

There might be Rob Bironas jokes laying around out there, but Im not picking them up.

The man left behind a widow and plenty of friends and family.

Im just glad we got an Alex after all. (Had one in the first place...)

Big difference kicking in a dome as compared to Philly.

This is a quick fix. The Lions want to find a long term solution to their kicking position. This is probably a stop gap until next years draft or UDFA signing.

The Lions are win now and do not have time for Freese to get over his case of the nerves.

Henery is young. This may not be a quick fix if he does his job well.

From what I have seen Henery is accurate but has limited range. Or his mechanics get fucked up when he has to kick a long field goal. If he is accurate to 40 this season great I just get the idea the Lions will want a guy that can be counted on at 50-55 to be 50% at least.

Kickoffs are not the problem as Martin has a huge leg.

If he is on the roster at the end of this year, I think he will be our kicker next year. He either kicks well and earns the job, or kicks like shit and gets replaced.

Freese has some correctable problems. They should still work with him and give him another try next year. Maybe hire Hanson to teach him.

Henry should be good for now.

Some people may actually explode if Freese is back next year

For the few times that GB offense gets close enough to actually kick a FG.
