So the refs f-ed up the backwards pass, and then rewarded the Patriots for playing after the whistle, which is illegal.

I have seen probably 10 overturns just like that. The refs don't care if the whistle blew first if there is a clear recovery.

Because the Patriots should never have been awarded the ball, as the refs blew the play dead even before the Pats defender bent over to pick up the ball (signalling and blowing whistles). So it should have remained Denver ball.

The refs f-ed up, and then f-ed up some more.
