Need some help from a mechanic

The first one was a leaky mess. Second one i got take for a ride by some dickhead, sold me the carb and smogged it. Never passed smog again. After dumping money into it every year for fake smogs and adjustments, i bought the edelbrock. That was on there for about 8 to 10 years, after i had the motor rebuilt. Motor only has about 25k after the rebuild. I have had the truck for almost as long as the wife.

I had a 4x4 truck back in college that was a 1977 Ford F250 with a 460 in it. It was 4 on the floor with 1st gear a Granny gear.

Like a dumbass I would lock in the front hubs and smoke all four tires in that Granny gear. That is possibly the worst thing one could do to that vehicle, yet at the time it was a source of much laughter and amusement !

Then one day while doing this, a connecting rod got thrown through the block. I eventually replaced the motor and traded the truck for a 1968 Chevy c/10 that I made into a lowrider.

The pickup coil is easily damaged from years of service due to heat. The wires get old and brittle and crack. The thing is sitting right there on the motor....getting hot !

You may still see insulation on the wires....but inside the wire may be damaged with cracks and brittle wires.

I'd like to know how many connectors survived on that truck since 1978 !

I just finished customizing a 2006 Ford f150 and I'll be damn if half the connectors I had to undo didn't break because of being so brittle.

The pickup module is what signals the ignition module to break the coil ground and fire the plugs. If the pickup module fails, the ignition module will never receive the signal, and it won't fire the plugs.

Do you have an OHM meter @Peter Gozintite ? You can test it.


One of the first symptoms of a bad ignition pickup is an engine that stalls. An old or failing ignition pickup may cut out the signal to the coil, which will cause the engine to stall. The engine will suddenly just shut off, almost as if the key had been turned off. That is why after watching your video I thought it was the ignition control module. But since that didn't fix it, I lean towards the pickup being the problem.

Well i have options after i change vac advance out later. The distributor isnt orginal, and when i was fucking with the wires to the pick up, they seem to be in really good shape. I still had spark even as the engine is dying which we thought was firing at the wrong time. I will check in later for another list of parts to change when this doesnt work.

What does the temp gauge read when it shuts off. Probably has idiot lights doesn't it.
It couldn't be at full operating temperature after only 10 minutes, can it???

How long does it run after the electric choke turns off?? It isn't at the same time is it??

Is it "exactly" 10 minutes every time it stalls or does it depend if its stone cold or warmed up a bit? Does the time it run's vary?

How long after it stalls does it take to start back up, I don't remember what you said.

I am at a loss now. I can't think of anything other than maybe someone put a plastic bottle cap in the gas tank and after 10 mins. it gets sucked to the pickup in the gas tank and prevents fuel from going to the pump ?!?!?!

I mean....after all, the most common causes of an engine just stalling have been shown not to be the issue.


I would try and see if that fuel pump is actually sending fuel after 10 mins. Sounded like an electric fuel pump...

Maybe take the hose from carb and route to a gas can. Then turn the key on and see if it pumps fuel for more than 10 minutes...

That is my last suggestion. I'm sorry we didn't have the answer for you @Peter Gozintite ! I've been there before myself many times. Electrical problems are the worst.
