Great discussion on NBC Sports.

They were talking about the Patriots needing a #1 receiver and Higgins, Metcalf, Adams, Godwin and AJ Brown were all being talked about. Then one guy spoke up and said, "I think that the Patriots would be better served signing a couple of #2 receivers than throwing a bundle of money at a #1 and having everyone else think that they had to step aside for the latest mega-millionaire." Everyone was listening. Then he said, "How about Darius Slayton and Zay Jones? Proven, hard working WRs that will produce and can help a QB while not dividing the locker room." He seemed to be stuck on something that we rarely give thought about. Signing a diva WR to a monster contract could be a hell of a lot more negative than beneficial.
If you have a WR room full of guys making $3M or less, how do they feel about a new guy making $30M and what would be the expectations??

I mentioned something similar to this in another post. Getting quality #2 and a strong run game. I feel it could work, save cap space allowing more monies for the linemen needed on both sides of the ball. While it was not me at the meeting I assure you, I did mention this.

It starts with the O line, A quality FB and TE's. A hard hitting durable RB with some good intermediate speed and vice like hands.

All of a Boutte and Douglas are wide open.

I've been in this camp preaching this a long time.

If the Pats landed Stanley, Sweat and Godwin in FA would you all be content with that. Or even just Stanley and Sweat?

Teams win SB trophies and players win MVP trophies. I'm interested in the entirety of the team and not concerned about any 3.

You asked if we would be content and I gave my answer as a long winded "no". I get you enjoy checking off all the boxes as the team builds. I do as well in other situations just not here.

Well that seems a bit unrealistic. A team needs to bring in players that improve the team and give the team a better chance to win and perhaps win it all. That cannot be accomplished without the talent, so, sign talented players, and hope for the best. You response to me reads as if there is some magic wand one can wave and poof we have another Lombardi

It's unrealistic to expect it. It's not unrealistic to have it within sights. But I agree with all your statements. I just am watching with a different level of depth than you. Instead of diving into all of this, I read what you post and feel more informed.

Well, all one has to do is look 850 miles south of Boston.

Yep....Washington Commanders. Got rid of an owner a couple years ago and got the right staff in place. Solid free agent signings and a good draft and all of a sudden a 3-14 team was in the playoffs. Doesn't happen very often, but they aren't sitting on their laurels. They're already shaking the trees and picking up the nuts.
