Reducing the sanctions on Penn State in an effort to help the conference. If the Big Ten has 10 bowl tie ins and only 6 teams win 6 games (to be bowl eligible) it would be really embarrassing.

YGTBSM ... PSU got sanctions reduced? Any real reasons why?

And I agree with the bowls.

Notre Dame doesn't have to worry about that, do they? They are too special to join a conference in football.

We don't want to join a conference. I've never understood why some people seem to have an issue with that.

I like what I saw once in response to somebody wanking about why ND thinks they're 'so special' and why they're not in a conference. Statement went something like this ....

Question: How come ND thinks they're so special and when are they going to actually join a conference like the rest of their athletics do?

Response: When it's a requirement to play in the NC game.

I thought that was a priceless response ... and nary a word from anybody after that got posted.

I said that (among the many I'm sure) and I still think that is the correct answer as to the "when" part of the question.

Maybe Iowa should think about joining the Missouri Valley conference so they have a chance to win a conference title.

I've always felt that College Football is the most flawed sport out there. The bowl system is absolutely terrible. College Football is just about the only relevant sport in the United States that had voters declare its national champion. The replacement system then used computers to declare who are the best two teams in the country (and we all know how that system turned out). Now everyone is excited about a four team "playoff". I can definitely see this system being as controversial as the last when it comes to the number four playoff spot (and the committee that is responsible for selecting it). College Football is still failing to get it right.

The eastern independent system that was alive for decades was absolutely awful and it eventually fell apart.

Notre Dame being an independent is still a problem for College Football. However from Notre Dame's perspective, why would you join a conference? You have an excellent deal with NBC, tie-ins with very good bowls and they have the ability to play a national schedule. Don't play Notre Dame for their football independence, blame the extremely flawed system that is College Football.

reasons why? easy. the sanctions were ridiculously unfair to begin with and even the governor has been putting pressure on the big ten to do something. the 4 parties involved have all been dealt with one way or another and are no longer a part of this university. how fair was it to spread the blame over the entire university/team/fans/town for the actions of one and the inactions of 3? please explain it to me. it's kind of like blaming a state because a senator got caught cheating on his wife. or blaming the vikings because Peterson beats his kid. there was no rhyme or reason to the punishment handed down by the idiots in control of the big ten. I believe the big ten FINALLY figured this out.

Very seldom do NCAA sanctions ever really affect the people involved. Reggie Bush was gone, the Ohio State players involved were gone for most the sanctions, when Bama and Auburn went on probation, the same thing. The sanctions are against the program, not the players. This is why just because you hide the crimes until the affected players are gone doesn't solve the problem for the school.

The other thing regarding Penn State is that they agreed to the sanctions. At no point did they try to fight them. Why?? There may be a lot of reasons for that, but why hold the NCAA responsible for the sanctions when the administration at the school agreed to them. Possibly there was more that could have come out.

easy. because they know they would have received the death penalty if they hadn't. they were told such!

also this particular problem was not like any other. the school didn't do anything wrong as in those cases you mention.
