No, he actually didn't. Payton was traded to Milwaukee for Ray.... It would have been interesting to see what could have been with those 2 - but honestly I can't imagine it much better than Payton with the 2 shooters he took in against Chicago - I don't think Ray changes the outcome of that series (even if it wasn't before his time).
Payton had Ray Ray= no championship. The scary thing is Kobe never had a great PG that is one of the best in the league and great assist guy, a plus is he can shoot too
