For my Pens it's Brian Dumoulin. I really like what he brings to the ice. Could see him being a solid defensive anchor for our 3rd defensive paring, and quite possibly the best defensive anchor on the whole team in a couple years. Unfortunately, we don't put young guys with loads of potential on our team. We like to make room for overpaid vets. As a result, we might even have to send Simon Despres down to the minors as well. This is why I hate preseason. You watch the games and you think to yourself that the guys making the roster will be the guys who perform the best when in actuality it's the guys with the biggest contracts.

I assume it has to be someone in our system, right?

As in, I can't start cheering for Pietrangelo and Malkin to make the Sabres roster out of camp, right?

Yeah, people on your team, most likely young prospects that get hosed by overrated vets with big contracts. That's really what my gripe is all about.

The Jackets did a decent job housecleaning and I wouldn't say they have anyone who qualifies as overrated with a big contract. Probably Umberger would be the closest, but he's not standing in the way of anyone. Jenner has all but made the team and might get first line time.

This year, I think it might be Ilari Melart, but even that is not exactly suspenseful. If Nikitin's foot is broken, then he's in. And if he plays well, then Niki will probably get traded.

Next year, that's the year I want to see some guys make it. Wennberg, Dano and Rychel. Anxiously awaiting their arrival.

I guess for me it's not so much people I want to make the team but the guys with the bloated contracts that I'd rather not see around any more.

Yes, I'm looking at you Drew Stafford and Ville Leino and looking way up at you Tyler Myers.

Same here. I have no idea why Brian Strait got a 3 year contract extension after 19 games or so. I realize it's only 750K, but it's a one way deal. Garth likes him too. They think he could be a top 4 defenseman. If that happens the Isles are in trouble. I know Matt Donovan will make the team. I'm hoping Griffen Reinhart makes it as well.

If JG Pageau doesn't make the big squad just because he doesn't have to clear waivers, I'm going to snap.

This kid is dynamite at both ends of the ice.

Brayden Mcnabb (6' 5" - 210 lbs) - just can't stick with the Sabres. Powerful slap shot.

Would love to see him as a regular at the point on the power play.

I should look into him. I take it he's a on the Rochester Americans? I was high on Kevin Porter last season, glad he got a shot. Also like Zemgus Gergensons. I think he's got a lot of upsides as well.

Yeah, Pagea should make the team. Also like Mark Stone. Sens always seem to have good young talent on the farm.

It's probably less frustrating to watch preseason when your team has a lot of cap room. That way they could do it based on who actually deserves to be on the roster instead of who has the biggest contracts.

After seeing him play in the Memorial Cup I thought he was a lock to make the Sabres a year or so afterward. With all the problems on defense they had last year I would think he'd have a good chance. They probably like Pysyk more though.

Not sure Hampus Lindholm will crack the Ducks roster, but he should. He looks pretty good at only 19 years of age.

Matt Dumba would be my choice for the Wild. I think he's still a year or so away but he has been lighting it up with Red Deer in the WHL

St. Croix or Miller or Lindberg all of them would probably be a better center the Richards.... But we didnt buy him out.

Hell even Ryan Bourque would be better and he is terrible.

Dan Bylsma seems to have a penchant for misusing young talent...which is ironic considering his work with AHL. If Beau Bennett doesn't get a legitimate shot with the big boys, I'll be enraged (big boys meaning top 2 lines).

In regard to the OP: take your pick of Dumolin, Maata, and Pouliot for the Pens. Unfortunately they have a backlog of Dmen, so none of those guys has a realistic shot. Orpik-Martin, Letang-Scuderi, Despres-Bortuzzo(having a great camp, he is)-Engelland. Engo is dead-weight with boxing gloves, IMO. Despres is seemingly near trade, or at the very least demotion. A player who was once deemed untouchable has fallen out of favor according to a lot of people "in the know". He came into camp way out of shape, and it will cost him dearly. Too much competition from young blood for that.

Yeah, Lindholm has been very impressive in preseason play. Probably a little young to crack the lineup as of now but maybe with the injury to Souray they'll be forced to consider putting him in the lineup.

From what I'm reading, Simon Despres just might be the one to get sent down as a result of our cap situation and the Pens unwillingness to trade Matt Niskanen. I think our defensive parings will go something like this,

D1: Letang - Scuderi
D2: Martin - Orpik
D3: Niskanen - Engelland

Bortuzzo and Despres will probably get hosed.

Would be cool to see Dumba make the team, I guess the only problems right now is that he's young plus Spurgeon's contract.
