This team will not stand for being above .500
I agree 100%
What we see on the field through 1/4 or so of the season is what we get and who the 2023 Mariners are.
They are a good team, with great starting pitching. But barring another 13-14 game winning streak like last year, this team will bounce all around the .500 mark ( which is a good teams rankings - just NOT a great team ) till October when they pack their bags and head home.
No chance this roster of 1-9 makes a legit playoff run. They simply do not have the talent up and down the line up.
On May 17th, 2022 the Mariners lost a game to Toronto putting them to a 16-21 record.
As of today they are 21-21 which is five wins better, also five more played to this point, than last year on this day. The sky is not falling even though the expectations going into the year has dictated a large amount of the frustration IMO. They went on to make a huge deal to land Castillo last year, and it's hard to imagine that they don't do the same thing for a bat this year. The pitching makes the rough team start a little less concerning but do need these guys to at least play up to their baseball card at the plate. Win today and they take yet another series, still an upward trajectory even if the expectation to performance value has been underwhelming thus far.
Put it this way, how concerned would you be if the Seahawks were 2-2 to start the season? Would the season be falling with even less margin for error in a shorter season? I would be plenty fine if the Hawks start 2-2, this is where the Mariners are currently at to start their season.
I kinda agree, but my baseball 'spidey sense' tells me this '23 team is in trouble:
1. last years remarkable turnaround was inspired and created by a historic 40 year plus team win streak, AND a disproportionate amount of 1 run win games.
2. Julio sophmore slump
3. Pitching staff that is far exceeding expectations to date
4. Too many players hitting far below 'their baseball card' as you stated
5. Does anyone TRULY believe the Mariners are going to splash the pot and pay mid season playoff push money for a BAT ! ( hahahaha )
I am enjoying watching the team progress and play decent ball.
I am NOT Enjoying watching endless batters in our line up NIGHTLY march to the dish with sub Mendoza line batting averages.
Until I see something that changes my mind, I firmly believe this is a 75-83 win team. 90+ wins is a pipe dream unless as you state they bring on a stud veteran hitter ( and SOON )
Looking around the AL standings / win % it could take 95 wins plus to reach the post season this year
