M's Trade Flexen & Gott

Mets acquired RHP Chris Flexen and RHP Trevor Gott from the Mariners for LHP Zach Muckenhirn; designated him for assignment.
The deal is now official. The Mets are eating the remaining $4 million roughly owed to Flexen for the remainder of the season, and will designate him for assignment, in order to land Gott from the Mariners. The 29-year-old righty was drafted by New York back in 2012 and made 27 appearances (11 starts) over three years before heading overseas to Korea back in 2019. He struggled to a bloated 7.71 ERA, 1.86 WHIP and 29/19 K/BB ratio across 42 innings (17 appearances, four starts) this season for Seattle.

So we traded for a guy who was DFA's in order to save $4M in salary. It only cost us a reliever they liked. That is not a good luck from a team coming off $83M profit....again.

Although not as exciting as the gamble Texas just made with Chapman this is a good sign of more activity to come. Jerry should be looking for Murfee and Gott replacements at the deadline. And won’t it be thrilling if he can replace them with options more cost effective than Flexen. This could shape up as 37th most exciting Seattle baseball deadline of all time.

Not to bring up a point from our conversation on another thread, but this move is exactly what I was talking about in that that dork Stanton is the catalyst in holding our organization back. Could this be a precursor to a larger move, sure. It just wreaks of more bottom line dealings to come with no moves of any value to the teams ability to win on the horizon. Bummed to lose Gott with nothing in return, not a good start to trade season.

No, you are 100% correct and please don't think I was against what you said. I dislike the man tremendously. My only reply was that I didn't trust Dipoto even if given an open checkbook. Stanton sucks and everything you said was dead on. This just backed your point perfectly. Traded players just to save money. Does it helps? No. It only puts his total savings up to $87M. Disgusting.
