in the cesspool today, Sekeres went hard at canucks vp communications Chris Brumwell (who was the pr guy the night Bert hit Moore) on live radio as they were broadcasting from a canucks for kids hockey school event ... came on the air probably expecting some softballs and got some high heat

Sekeres did a great job of putting him on the spot by badgering away ... laid it out that "some would say" allowing a distraught and emotional Bertuzzi to speak immediately after the game would have possibly diminished the claims that the next days press conference tears were crocodile tears

asked Brumwell ... "was it your call to stop Bertuzzi from speaking to the media post game that night?"

um err um err

Wow is right. I'm really surprised. Bertuzzi is a massive douche and deserved some penalty but I think this sets a pretty crazy precedent.

How on earth did they come to the conclusion that Steve Moore would have ever made that kind of money in the remainder of his career?

I was watching somebody discuss this last night and it boiled down to the age of Moore at the time (25) combined with the fact that he is Harvard educated. Looking at similar types of situations, they ran the numbers and came up with a likely settlement number in the 20-30 million dollar range.

Exactly, I assume his argument stemmed more from the fact that the injury has prevented him from using his education to tackle new opportunities that would normally be afforded an individual with a Harvard education.

yah Eric Macramella was on tsn1050 this morn and said he can no longer focus so any post hockey career in finance is out :noidea:

They also brought up the issue of legal fees which will eat at that figure ... guesstimates of between 2 and 4 million dollars

heres the global vid btw

Didn't realize he was Havard educated...that makes the figure much more sensible. Still...that's a lot of money.

Right, so it's actually a double whammy (not only his NHL career ended, but any type of career that he could have had using that Harvard education has been lost as well).

That said, other Harvard educated people speculated that the Oilers would score 410 goals for the 2007-08 season so it's still a crapshoot.

I have a feeling that Gary Bettman is pleased today, yeah they doled out some money to Steve Moore, but now they don't have to endure a 4 month long trial (that was how long people were speculating the trial would last) where the NHL's name would have been dragged through the mud.

It's a drop in the bucket compared to the damage the details that could've been exposed would've done to the NHL brand.

the NHLs code doesnt get dragged out in it either, everything that is caveman in the NHL will stay secret and safe.

Okay, I can see a little better how they got the number, but ...

From Wikipedia:
On November 8, 2005, Moore's Toronto-based lawyer, Tim Danson, said that Moore was skating and doing regular workouts, but continued to suffer concussion-related symptoms.[4] He continued working out for some years afterward, but had to abandon his comeback attempt when it became apparent he would never be medically cleared to return to the ice again.

To say he can't use his Harvard Education to earn a living implies total disability. Trying to come back to hockey the very next year indicates far less than total disability. And I would wonder if his comeback attempt compounded his injury issues.

There's an argument that can be made (although also one they could blatantly lie about) that doing any form of stressful work would cause symptoms to reappear. We pull kids from classes at school because they get headaches from trying to think too much, for lack of better phrase. A lot of people with the long term symptoms tend to have issues focusing too. I could definitely see that being a hindrance to many jobs, even if not physically demanding.
