I've considered running John Lackey over with my car.

One deal that always stuck out to me was the Mike Hampton deal was a collosal failure. Carlos Lee to the Astros (6 yr 100 mil) was pretty bad.

As a Giants fan, I am OK with the Zito deal now. We have 2 rings since the signing, and he was a key part of one if those. 7/144 was a contract that we thought would cripple us, but we were able to make it work.

How we were able to survive two horrid, crippling contracts is beyond me, though.

Depends on your room for error (ie market potential), the Pirates, Padres, Rays won't give out mega deals cause if they are wrong their franchise is crippled.

The Angels, Yanks, Sox, Cubs, Dodgers, etc shouldn't shy away since they have plenty of money to burn, and at worst, lose the opportunity cost of the roster spot.

There is a whole gob of teams in the middle, who might be able to sign one guy if he is the perfect guy, and they have a reasonable chance of knowing he will be a great player for the duration.

i do agree element.....but can we even say it is worth it for the big money teams...yes the yanks have made the play-offs but they only got 1 ws win with the cc,a-rod,tex deals

their dyansty run was with players from the farm and a few FA to fill the gaps.....

boston didnt win anything with crawford/gonzo and we shall see what the dodgers do with their money grab(giants are better..imo)...yes the dodgers werent FA deals but they took on a ton of cash

Yep, Zito, for sure.

He was way overpaid, (duh) but the fact that the Giants have 2 World Series titles to their credit in the duration of his contract, makes it worthwhile. Who knows exactly what his value has been. He may be the best and least-talked-about mentor in Baseball. He's had Lincecum, Cain, Bumgarner, Romo & Vogelsong under his wing, and he might have been partly responsible for each of them becoming what they have become. I think the Giants scored big time when they signed him, whether the stats reflect it or not.

For Boston, the last good deal was probably Manny Ramirez. It ended poorly, but for the bulk of his time (statistically speaking), he was worth most of his pennies...

I wouldn't put Adrian Gonzalez in this group at all. His value, dollar-for-dollar, is much higher than anyone listed. In fact, it's not even close.

He certainly didn't show much the last part of 2012. He's off to a pretty good start this season but lets see if he can maintain this level of play. You certainly give this guy much more credit than I would.

Not sure if it was mentioned here yet but When texas signed ARod he was the best player in baseball throughout his time there... Just because he made the most and texas was not a good team does not mean that he was not worth it... That is for lots of guys here, what does worth it mean?? did the team have to win the world series?? Then CC sabathia was a great contract since he won a WS with the Yankees...

halladay/lee deals havent worked yet for the phillies

I think i kinda would disagree with this. Halladay's deal isnt all that bad, but no WS

Lee is great, I have no complaints whatsoever. Last year was one of the weirdest things Ive ever witnessed. The guy pitched great, but had nothing to show for it

This is a bold statement and I'm sure you're going to find many that disagree.

In terms of all around, I think he was. Gold glover that could steal bases and drive in 100+ every year. That's tough to duplicate.
