Can't think of a single example. But then the Giants generally have the problem of having too many people on the roster and not enough slots - that's why they use the "DFA" and "adding a minor leaguer to the 60-day DL" so often (they need to immediately make room on the roster for somebody else because it's full). The Giants tend to lose quite a few players to other teams each year because of it.

If you don't believe me, use google and search for "transaction rules" or "transaction glossary". Read the info on what "options" are, and what happens when no options are left. Before Cot's moved to BP it had a pretty good transaction section - it may still be there.

Just happened yesterday to Steve Edlefsen

Sorry if you thought I meant I did not believe you. Not the case at all. I just never heard that rule and wanted an example. Not a challenge.

It's amazing how ignorant our local sports talk show personalities can be. Gary and Larry on KNBR lauding A's Asst. GM David Forst for going to Harvard, and praising Billy Beane for "starting" the trend of hiring "smart guys" for the front office. I guess they have never heard of Sandy Alderson, Dartmouth and Harvard Law graduate, Beane's boss and mentor, and the guy who founded the "new school" of baseball management.

Sorry if I sounded upset or hurt, that isn't where I was coming from. "if you don't believe me look it up" is something I have said so often to my kids it has made its way into my everyday lexicon.

Edit: And, as Giants' fans, we rarely see it because they keep their roster so full ALL THE TIME, so the opposite is generally what we see : the team has to drop a guy from the 40-man when they have to make room, then assign him to the minors.

Yup. So far in September 3 guys have been DFA'd (Edlefsen, Hacker, Correa) because room was needed for guys not on the 40-man (Yusmeiro Petit, Burriss, Xavier Nady, respectively).

And at other times this year :
- FSanchez moved from the 15-day to the 60-Day DL (for Machi)
- DFA'd Burriss (to make room for Scutaro)
- Surkamp moved from the 15-day to the 60-Day DL (for Penny)
- Wilson moved from the 15-Day to the 60-Day DL (for Hacker)
- Traded away Stewart (made room for Blanco)

I believe that tzill was saying exactly that (he was DFA'd). If you read the text he quoted, it's my post talking about how the Giants DFA players to make room on the roster for somebody else. But maybe not - Originally I thought that he was saying the Edlefsen was sent to the minors and left on the 40-man. The statement was ambiguous.

And, to be pedantic, Edlefsen was DFA'd on Sep 7th (which removed him from the 40-man). He was outrighted on Sep 11th (meaning he wasn't claimed off waivers by any team, and was sent to the minors).

Since Edlefsen doesn't have 3 years of service time and this is his first time being outrighted, he doesn't have any say in it. If he makes it back on some team's 40-man in the future and is again outrighted he can then refuse, but he gives up all his "guaranteed" salary if he refuses (unless he has at least 5 years of major league service time). Something like that happened to an A a few years ago (I think it was Jack Cust). He was outrighted to the minors out of ST, and he had more than 3 years of service time but less than five. He accepted the demotion because he was owed over $2.5M for the season and he didn't want to give it up. The A's called him back up the next month, IIRC.

Edlefsen wasn't even in the majors, the Giants just needed the roster spot. He also has one option year left (if he ever gets added back to the 40-man and is demoted to the minors).

Fascinating stat:

Since being traded to the Giants on July 27, Scutaro has swung and missed just nine times in 198 plate appearances.

Not 9 Ks...9 swing throughs....

AB: THATS HOW YOU FUCKING PLAY THE GAME. YA HEAR ME, YA TWITCHY BASTARD?

DFA the fool. That extrapolates to 36 K in a full season.

We will rue the day we sacrificed Culby for this schmoe...

With his contact rate, he should only strikeout 7 times a year. He's not utilizing his talent to its fullest.

Posey is going to make multiple millions more in his career thanks to Bennie Molina. How? Bengie's mysterious thigh injury in the 2009 playoff push forced Sabean to call up Posey in September. The service time earned in that period pushed Posey into super-two status during an MVP-like year.

Good point. However, with a player like Buster Posey, I expect him to have an MVP-like year anytime he plays more than 130 games. The millions just arrive one season sooner. :)

Gee, did anyone notice at the time how he was screwing the org?

Oh yea, I did. Thus his early death in my eyes.

3 Walker Cooper 5.1 1947 32 NYG
4 Buck Ewing 4.6 1888 28 NYG
5 Buck Ewing 4.5 1884 24 NYG
6 Chief Meyers 4.4 1912 31 NYG
