I'll definitely take the starters over the course of a 162 game season. But in a playoff series, the value of late inning relievers/closers goes up big time. We saw in the world series the Mets have multiple 9th inning leads thanks in part to strong SP and their relievers couldn't close it out, while the Royals BP shut the door for good.

I'd rather have the lead and take my chances holding it than not have it in the first place though.

I was gonna go with the Mets rotation

Until I saw Hu was here

And then you backed away slowly, without losing eye contact, in fear and trembling?

Yeah, that's right...

Yeah, that Royals offense was something else. It's not like the Mets had a shabby bullpen during the payoffs, just that the KC bats were simply out of this world and would not take a pitch. I don't recall ever seeing a show quite like that in my life, other than maybe the late-90's yankees teams.

Also, in the final game, it was starter Harvey who couldn't finish the job, after arguing with Collins that he could get it done. At the time it was probably the best decision but in hind sight it doesn't seem to matter one way or the other, since Familia had also given up a lead earlier in the series. There was just no stopping those guys late in the game.

It stung like hell at the time, but years from now I will be talking about that series as one of the most bizarre and entertaining that I have ever had the pleasure of seeing.

Even though it was Harvey who didn't close it out and the defense for giving Hosmer a chance to score on the groundout, I'd also put some blame on Collins. I think after the walk to Cain, he needed to take him out. There were mistakes throughout in the WS for them between starters not closing it out, closers not shutting the door, offense not waking up, and managers making a mistake or two. Royals were just the more complete team.
And although it obviously sucks, it felt like the Mets were ahead of schedule in 2016 and should be even better with more experience. Obviously nothing is guaranteed so we don't know if another WS trip will be on the horizon but those arms are gonna keep improving as they get older.

Chapman just suspended 30 games for violation of domestic abuse policy.
