NFL Draft Talent Tiers - 2013

Welcome to Scouts Inc.'s tier rankings. What are the tier rankings? They are a helpful draft resource for some NFL general managers. (We know of three specifically who utilize this tool.) First, by ranking prospects in tiers it can help resist the urge to take a lower rated player at a position of greater need. Second, it can help to show which portions of a draft class are deep and which are lean -- both in overall talent and at certain positions.

By comparison, the 2012 draft was noticeably stronger at the top -- particularly in Tier 1 (six players), Tier 3 (nine players), and Tier 5 (23 players). The 2012 class also had three quarterbacks -- Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, and Ryan Tannehill in the top three tiers -- but the first signal caller in 2012 (Geno Smith) doesn't show up until Tier 4.

On the flipside, the 2013 class is significantly stronger on Day 2 with five more players in Tier 6 and 16 more players in Tier 7 than we had a year ago. In addition, the 2013 class has 109 players in the top 7 tiers compared to 94 in 2012.

Here is the second of three editions of 2013 tier rankings.

Has this been Mcshays top 10 WR all year? Seems to be alot different then alot of other experts top 10.

I'm not sure what McShay has changed over the year, but I think his ranking is actually fairly consistent with a lot of other evaluators. The most glaring exceptions being Patterson ranked lower (but he's been sliding on a lot of boards lately) and the lack of a slide for Keenan Allen due to his injured 40 time. I don't necessarily agree with his rankings, but I don't think they're that far off from a lot of "experts'" rankings.

I want to hear the reason for why Patterson's sliding. I've always been consistent saying he's NOT EVER going to be a #1 WR. For him to sliding now after evaluators already knowing he's a body catcher and reportedly not all that football smart; there's got to be a third reason now.

There is very little that I like in the first four tiers combined. Probably less than 10 players. Tiers 5-7 on the other hand have it going on! So glad we are positioned where we are.

that's the highest I've seen Dobson rated anywhere. I hope he's wrong. I like him for Steelers in the 3rd

Everywhere? Just kidding. We do have a lot of picks and a most of them are on the edges of the rounds (I know, the overall number is more important than the round number).

If Patterson were to fall to the right team/coach that utilizes him properly and plays to his strengths he could be very good...almost Percy Harvin good. But if a team drafts him and expects him to be a prototypical WR then it will definitely not work out well. If he fell to the Niners I wouldn't mind adding his talents to our offense. I'd trust Harbaugh to utilize his skill set properly.

He'd be a great pick for pittsburgh in the 3rd. I compare him to Greg Little when he was one of my favourite mid-round prospects a couple of years ago, but Little ended up being picked in the late 2nd. That's what will probably happen with Dobson IMO.

He & Swope could be just as (if not better than) the higher-rated WRs like Patterson, Hunter, Dobson, Austin, Allen IMO. That's why I'm against the Niners taking a WR in the first; might as well just hold tight & take Dobson or Swope later (or even Kenny Stills, whom I like too but not as much).

Something just seems wrong when Alec Ogletree is a higher rated prospect than his teammate Jarvis Jones. It's not that I don't think he is good, but Jones was dominating as a pass rusher and a playmaker when games were on the line. Alec was just a good middle linebacker that could make plays sideline to sideline. A great MLB can do a lot for your defense (P.Willis), but usually teams would rather have a great pass rusher.
