The Yankees and Brian McCann have agreed upon a five-year, $85 million deal, per Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
The deal also includes a vesting option for a sixth year that could bring the deal to $100 million. McCann has been a top option for the Yankees since the outset of free agency, so it's no surprise they got their guy. The 29-year-old hit .256/.336/.461 with 20 homers in 102 games in 2013 and should improve on those numbers in his new digs

So much for yanks not spending next year:suds:

Dont believe it. No way you pay a catcher almost $20M a season, who bats .256 before heading to the AL east pitching barage

More to hitting than average. He had a .336 OBP, .461 SLG% and 115 OPS+. 6th among catchers with 400+ PA in wRC+. All of which make him one of the best offensive catchers in the league. He's a career .277/.350/.473 (117 OPS+) hitter. Those are very good numbers for a catcher.

His production's fine. He might not stick at catcher much longer though. I didn't think he'd get such a contract. Wow.

Not a fan of it, he hasn't been the same the past few years, but they needed an upgrade at Catcher.

McCann has been injured part of the last 2 seasons?....a catcher who will hit 20 to 25 hr and hit .250 to .290....he also had strikeout kings Uggla and Upton batting behind him, why pitch to him..do you say Matt Wieters is a better catcher? look at boths stats again

I called this a week ago on the MLB daily thread...1st step of the Yankees Youth movement...30 to 35, lol.

Wieters has been one of the better catchers in the league ever since he came up, but it has mostly to do with his defense. He certainly hasn't lived up to the whole "Mauer with power" gimmick. Power without the Mauer, sure, I guess. And even then, his power numbers are nothing special (career .420 SLG%, .165 ISO, both of which have only been somewhat above league average).

I don't think he's a bust, but he was certainly overhyped.

.255 career average? with 20-25 hr power? exactly what McCann is...except .277 career average with 20-25 hr..

I agree Weiter is top 5 AL catchers, just like McCann is top 5 NL catchers...makes them about the same......020 in average equal to the defense differential...pretty close to equal.

McCann's OBP is 31 points higher, his SLG% is 53 points higher, and his OPS+ is 19 points higher. Those are some pretty big differences.

that is an awful big contract for a guy coming off 2 of his worst years in the MLB. he bounced back this year, but last year he hit .230 with .300 OBP.

if the yankees get the 2006-2011 McCann -- it is a great signing for them. that is a big 'if' though.

hold it...I am saying the Yankees have their best FA signing in a long while....like him over Swiffer, Burnett, etc disaster signings...if your saying the same thing...then we are good..I think McCann is better than Wieters even with the difference in defense...

I was answering LogicMans thread.

Sorry, thought that was saying there's not much of a difference between him and Wieters offensively.

5 years, one of the better catchers, when healthy, in the league, during a catchers peak years...29 to 34....very good deal for the Yankees and a perfect way to ease Gary Sanchez into the roll to learn the staff...???? Big "if"????...naw, he will only hit .230 for the next 5 years...lol??? over 20 mil for .275 and 30 hr, for a position with more supply than catchers is a bad contract..you should know what bad contracts are now, Tigers just got out of one.

Its a very good signing...based on Posey, Molina other top catchers...which McCann is....your drinking or something tonight...just ready to fight someone based on your posts tonight...I think I will pass...need to find the ignore feature probably for tonight, but I will figure it out.

.256. And he had a .336 OBP.

That was a typo Nava -- sorry bout that. I meant to say he bounced back this year, but the year before (2012), he hit .230 with .300 OBP.

1. Nowhere did I say he would hit .230 for the length of his contract. I said he was one year removed from hitting .230 with a .300 OBP. I also said if they get the McCann from 2006-2011, it was a great signing.

2. Just so I understand your thought process -- the one position where the body takes the most beating is at catcher, yet a catchers peak years are 29 to 34. Are you not the person who JUST said, 30 is when injuries start to mount and the body is more prone to breakdown?

3. You should get in touch with the Minnesota Twins GM to let them know -- a catcher's peak years are 29 to 34, so they shouldn't move Mauer to 1st base when he is only 30. He still has 4 more years of prime catching left him.

Just the fact you put McCann in the same category as Posey and Molina tells me you must be drinking. Both Posey and Molina have been better offensively over the last couple years and it isn't even close defensively.

If McCann is worth 17 million a year -- St Louis is robbing Molina blind giving him only 15 million a year.

Great pick up at an awful contract, but it's not like the Yankees actually care about that, right?

Are you actually telling me, you don't know a catchers peak hitting years are from 29-34 and have been for a long time...please, tell me that...because its common knowledge that catchers work more on defense and in history develop as a hitter later than other positions...and yes players bodies do break down more in their 30's...also common knowledge in baseball history....I really thought you knew stuff beyond the Tigers baseball team.

Mauer being a hitting exception to the rule...he can hit with any position and might go down as one of the best hitting catchers at his pace, the move to 1b is absolutely to help his body, just like McCann will do, move to 1b after Sanchez is called up. As well as Miggy's move to 1b will help his body...if he stayed at 3b during the life of Fielders contract...he would wind up with a higher probability of injuries. (of course Miggy's situation has changed, so the outcome changes, science 101)

other positions hitting peak year average 27 = the body has fully matured
Catchers 29= after first learning to call MLB games, getting defense down then work more on hitting...
Human body= breaks down more after 30

All rules have exceptions= David Freese, lol, Ichiro, tori hunter...but more will start since PED's are suppose to be eliminated now and go back to the natural way of things. 15 to 20 year careers will be less common.

why? McCann hits 20-25 hrs a year....Molina averaged about 7 hr a year when he signed his contract...not sure if you understand the contracts started at different times? thus would be worth different if a player outperforms his averages and yes he would technically be underpaid, now, not when he signed the contract. Who gets 15 mil a year averaging 7 hr .270 ave a year? so if someone averages 20 hr a year .277 wouldn't they make more?

Molina wasn't worth 15 mil when he signed his contract either (molina a perfect example of history of hitting for catchers by the way)...contracts are based on what they plan on them doing.

I knew I should have put you on ignore...you just want to argue and you tend to "discuss" with your Tigers arm...when you learn to use both arms maybe you will learn a bit more impartiallity and open mindedness...yes I believe since the Fielder trade and miggy's move to 1b improves his chances at less injuries now...its called an open mind and adjusting to the higher probablities...you on the other hand think a change in thoughts on a subject is being not right....closed mind

and I have to find the ignore thingy after this one...I give, your right, you win...later.
