Let us not stop there at just 5 years. We might as well tell the whole truth.
Here's some data on how badly the Detroit Lions have drafted
But the Washington Post unleashed a plethora of data visualizations on how all 32 NFL teams have drafted since 1996, so let's have a little fun and see just how bad the Lions have drafted the past two decades.
Using draft values and metrics from ProFootballReference.com, the Washington Post compiled data from each NFL team's draft performance and stacked them up across the league. Here's what they've found out:
The Lions rank 28th in the NFL with an "average draft value" of 11.1 per draft pick. The overall league average is 12.7. The Pittsburgh Steelers rank No. 1 at 16.37, followed by the Indianapolis Colts (15.27), Green Bay Packers (14.86), Baltimore Ravens (14.71) and New England Patriots (14.71). It should be no coincidence that each of those teams have won at least one Super Bowl since 1996 (four of them won at least two).
