I see the Levy contract playing out much like the Suh contract. Levy's agent will want him to be one of, if not the highest paid LB in the NFL, and will use all the leverage available to make it happen. Don't see Mayhew slapping the tag on him. Could see the Lions losing out on Levy in FA next year.

No worries, we can bring Jordan Dizon back.

Makes no sense to say that the Lions wouldn't tag levy. His number won't be insane and in some ways it allows them to get his best years with no long term financial commitment or up-front payments. Just like every businessman knew they'd never tag Suh, it's simply good business to tag Levy if he doesn't extend and his play remains at a high level.

Mayhew had every intention of tagging Suh. He got duped into thinking he didn't need it, and that Suh would just re-sign. Mayhew will make the same mistake w Levy.

Tagging Levy would cost the Lions over 12 million fwiw.

Mayhew screwed up with Levy when he said this:

"(A long-term extension for Levy) may make sense, it may not," Mayhew said. "I'm not opposed to it. I obviously want him to be here a long time, but, you know, we obviously have some other big fish in the pan right now."

Had Suh been re-signed, it would have meant bye bye Levy. Levy and his agent won't forget it.

If Mayhew had intended to tag Suh, he'd be tagged right now. Insane to think otherwise. He was never going to kill the team paying that kind of money for a quarter of a second. When Suh didn't sign an extension before the tag deadline the writing was on the wall. Sorry, but that's just not clear thinking.

And I think the same position on Levy, at less than half the price, is easy thinking. Are you just trolling, or do you really believe this?

It's too bad you aren't the Lions GM, Max. Probably have a few Superbowls by now.

Current highest paid ILB makes 9 million a year. Current highest paid OLB makes 7 million.

Tagging Levy would cost over 12 million. Then re-signing him at about 10 million a year.

You can check on this if you want, but the tag price is the average of the top 5 salaries at the position.

Last year Houston from KC was tagged at 13.1 million.

Slay will command a 67 million dollar contract when he's due. Good chance the Lions aren't retaining all 4: Levy, Reiff, Ansah and Slay. Even without Suh.

Forget about extended Ngata for more than a year, if anything.

"In the previous collective bargaining agreement (CBA), the non-exclusive tag at each positional group was determined by the top five salaries at the position for the previous year. This calculation has become a common misconception since things changed in 2011.

The new CBA, however, tied the non-exclusive tag to the salary cap in lieu of the top-five-salary comparison.

Today's tag numbers are calculated by a relatively simple formula—the sum of the previous five franchise-tag figures at any given position divided by the sum of the overall salary cap for the past five seasons and multiplied by the 2015 salary cap.

That calculation will yield a percentage of the 2015 salary cap on a positional basis. "

Last year Houston from KC was tagged at 13.1 million.

They used a non-exclusive tag on Houston an exclusive tag would have been almost 15 million with the expected cap jump next year those numbers will be considerably higher Mayhew needs to get these contracts done now for both Levy and Reiff. Waiting will just cost the team an extra 1-2 million per player maybe more.

How many years for Slay's contract are you talking about?

Ansah is a solid DE, but he isn't going to demand top of the market money to re-sign him.

Reiff is solid, but will command nowhere near elite LT money.

Levy is the guy the Lions need to worry about locking up. Slay still has two more years under contract.

Ansah led all DE's in QB hits last year. Can he keep that up without Suh? If he does, he will command top 5 DE money.

Reiff won't get elite money, but he'll get a huge contract, if not with Detroit, with someone. Everyone's beloved PFF ranked him as the best LT in the NFC North.

Slay is expected to get Joe Haden money. 5 years, near 70 million. Warford and Ansah are up the same year.

No way they keep all 4. Even without Suh.

For Levy being the guy they need to lock up, Mayhew sure isn't showing any signs of urgency to do so. I wonder what Levy's agent is saying to the Lions behind the scenes. No reason they won't try to make him the top paid LB in the NFL.

Something has to give.

If Levy gets tagged, it had better not be by anyone currently employed by the Detroit Lions.

Fucker doesn't Rush the passer, no reason in hell to pay him pass rusher money.
